| 1382553 | 2014-08-26 20:39:00 | A word of warning for Kiwis tempted by offers of working in the US at summer camps: some summer camps are equivalent to teen gulags . Avoid any "boot camps" or "camps for troubled teens . " Note these are NOT for deliquents, not for teens who have committed felonies . Find out where you're going to be working, before you leave . In particular be more cautious of camps if they are in red states . . wikipedia . org/wiki/Red_states_and_blue_states" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org Some years ago, my sister-in-law over-reacted to my rebellious niece, who wore dressed like a vampire and liked dragons . My nieces worse offense was having a boy in her room after school without permission . My sister-in-law sent my niece off to a very expensive "troubled teen" camp in Idaho . It's well-known for having many celebrities spoiled brats . My sister-in-law, along with many other parents, paid for the "kidnap my child" service, which involves two large men showing up at her house, and forcibly escorting her child door to door, including the plane trip . The children are refused ALL access to the outside world for a months, not even phone calls . Afterwards only the parents can talk to the child once a week for 30 minutes . No access to the internet the entire time . To give you an idea of the regiment, a girl decorated her room by hanging a small construction paper mobile in her room . She was punished for one week . In one case, a male teen was unenthusiastic about attending a fire circle, and sharing his feelings . He got up to leave . He was tackled by three camp counsellors who broke his arm while restraining him on the ground for one hour . The camp did not take him to a hospital till the next day . He got a cast, and his doctor told me not to lift anything heavier than a feather . On his return to camp, he had to continue his daily duty of chopping wood . His arm did not set correctly, and was told it could never be repaired . As it is the US, his parents sued . But the high courts in Idaho ruled that the camp was not at fault; given the liability waver and the nature of the camp . So again to any kiwis travelling abroad to work at summer camps, know where you are going beforehand, and treat any camp in "red" states with more diligence . |

| 1382554 | 2014-08-26 21:16:00 | That sounds like a very extreme case. I went on a Summer Camp back in 1991 in up state NY. I did a summer camp for under privilleged kids from Brooklyn, The Bronx and Queens (the rougher areas of New York) and met a fantastic bunch of counsellors and kids and loved being over there. | Webdevguy (17166) | ||

I wouldn't taint all summer camps, or even those for those with behavioural issues, because of one camp however long ago. As a side note - got any references to this camp, maybe a news item about the treatment there or anything? :) |

| 1382557 | 2014-08-26 22:47:00 | Well my daughter went on one a few years ago now and loved every minute of it. Only hiccup was a call to dad from Grand Central Station advising me she was lost. Given that Id never been to Grand Central Station, or indeed New York I wasnt much help but she happened to notice other girls looking lost who were wearing Summer Camp T-shirts and between them they got sorted. Seems there was a communication breakdown along the line somewhere. All character building stuff. Other than that she had a great time and made many international friends, even a Russian who somehow was allowed to Summer Camp on Long Island. |

I met my first ever real live Russian who was also headed to a summer camp while I was in the hotel in New Jersey waiting to be placed in a summer camp . That was in 1991 . Prior to that the only place I'd ever seen a Russian was on the news . These days is pretty normal for Russians to travel outside of the motherland . |
