1395594 2015-03-19 21:44:00 In theory I could just replace the board as you suggest, but that's pretty low priority as I hardly use the ethernet these days anyway. Tony (4941)

Good question.

And, is there anything behind that board, behind the metal panel\box or whatever?

Because now that I think of it, you keep mentioning "Hub" - which technically is very different from a switch - it's just a repeater basically, it forwards packets on all ports to all other ports... and if one was to really, really, really cheap out... such a device technically doesn't even need active circuitry to run, eg: www.zen22142.zen.co.uk

I would check exactly what kind of device your "Home Hub" is, because if it is in fact nothing more than a matrix of diodes and ethernet jacks.... Well....

1395596 2015-03-20 04:00:00 The printing on the board says "12-way PABX". On the right there are 3 RJ45 sockets. The top is labelled "EXP" and has an ethernet cable plugged in that goes to/comes from who knows where. The centre socket is empty and is labelled "ALARM"; we could have had a monitored alarm but chose not to. The third is labelled "TEL" and has what looks like telephone wiring going from it to another RJ45 on the bottom row of the main section of the board, which is labelled "PABX". Once again we could have had a PABX installed but chose not to. The rest of that row is empty.

The middle row of sockets have ethernet cables that go off all over the house. The top row is empty and is the mystery. It is not at all clear to me how the data (a) gets to the board and (b) then gets distributed. These days I do have another old router that is connected to three of the sockets in the top row which connects up the office if I need a wired connection. Socket 2 connects to main router (the one we have been discussing in this thread), socket 3 and 4 go to other sockets in the office for another PC and the laptop. That was not the original configuration - there was no extra device. Unfortunately I have forgotten and there is no one around these days who knows how it was originally configured, and I can't remember why I introduced the extra device. As I said previously, I hardly ever need the wired network these days, so I haven't got round to nutting it out. One day... (if I don't replace the whole thing first).

There is no obvious power supply to the board and I'm not about to unmount it just to see what is behind it.
