| 1395585 | 2015-03-16 08:51:00 | Could you take a photo of this home hub device In theory yes, in practice, not any time soon. It is in a compartment in a cabinet in a cupboard, down at shin level, and as my back froze up on me on Saturday and I am currently only getting around with the aid of a stick and a back brace the chances of getting a pic of something in that position are pretty low. :) Maybe later. It is just a board with a swag of rj45 connectors. The good news is that I've just come back to the PC after nearly 5 hours and it is all still connected. |

| 1395586 | 2015-03-18 01:55:00 | The PC was up all day yesterday with no problems:clap . So last night I plugged in the connection to the home security hub and it immediately all turned to custard. Locked up, and wouldn't revive itself even after resetting the adapter. Unplugged it and it all came right again. So today I tried it again and the same thing happened. I had a continuous ping going and as soon as I unplugged the connection it all started working again without more intervention. So turning off Task Offload seems to have stabilised the main setup, but there is still something weird going on if I plug in the rest of the house. Fortunately I can do without that most of the time and just use the Wi-Fi, so I'll keep looking at that as a background task. There are a few things I can try there to maybe narrow it down a bit more. In answer to the millions (well one anyway) of requests, attached is a pic of the (probably) offending hub. I'll report back if anything else develops, but for the moment at least it looks like things are OK. Thanks again everyone. 6300 |

| 1395587 | 2015-03-19 01:36:00 | Is that all there is to it? Because to me that looks like some sort of phone line splitter rather than a data switch/hub. If that's the case then I'm not surprised you have had all sorts of weird issues when you plug in to it! | Alex B (15479) | ||

If that's the case then I'm not surprised you have had all sorts of weird issues when you plug in to it! No, it's definitely a data hub as well. You can see the ethernet cables to the rest of the house coming out of the bottom. It is a proprietary board constructed by the Smart House people that does the data stuff plus also giving the capability of having a PABX as well. It has been there for about 12 years, and has worked adequately during that time. It is only recently I've been having problems, which may or may not be associated with that board. I'm still checking that out. I actually usually use wireless these days - the ethernet is largely redundant. If I was building a house today I don't think I'd bother with house-wide ethernet. Back when we were building wireless was a lot more primitive and slower, so the ethernet seemed like the way to go. |

| 1395591 | 2015-03-19 20:12:00 | It may have gone faulty... 12 years is a long time for consumer grade electronics...One would have hoped that these were not "consumer grade electronics" seeing as they form part of the house infrastructure, but I'd believe anything of the mob that designed it. Their general technology and concepts were very good, but their ability to run a business was appalling. My electrician, who did the original install as a contractor to Smart House says I could replace the board with a "standard" one, but he also knows of several Smart House clients who have ripped out the whole thing and replaced them something else - usually the Clipsal system. | Tony (4941) | ||

I ended up writing the user guide for the whole installation as an offset against some of the price, as what they came up with was (a) incomplete and (b) totally incomprehensible in places. Fortunately in another life I did technical writing, so I could do it. The documentation did not extend to a description/user guide for the board though. |

| 1395593 | 2015-03-19 21:20:00 | Are the ethernet cables direct from wall sockets or do they plug into something else? If they are just direct to wall sockets it looks like you could replace the whole thing with a cheap switch with however many ports you actually need. Assuming it'll fit in the space and power is available. Something like this maybe www.pbtech.co.nz I have 2 5 port ones myself, 1 in the office running all my devices and 1 in the lounge for the PS3, TIVO, etc. The only fixed ethernet wiring I did in my house is from the Lounge to the office and just a single cable. I've considered installing more but I can't see anywhere I'd be happy to have all the hub wiring except maybe the hot water cupboard and I wouldn't put equipment in there. Plus my house has no wall cavities so wiring it a nuisance. |
