1395574 2015-03-15 21:20:00 What if you set all your IP addresses to automatic instead?That's how it used to be and there has been no discernible change between the two states. One reason for the static addresses (on the PC anyway) is that when they were dynamic it gave problems with syncing Outlook to my phone as the phone would be looking for a specific IP address which had changed.

I unplugged the home security connection and so far today there have been no problems.

1395575 2015-03-15 21:38:00 Does that home security hub have its own IP address you can access for a config page or something? Agent_24 (57)

No, it's totally dumb - I guess technically it's a switch rather than a hub. The problem does occur even when the home security is disconnected - just not nearly so often.

1395577 2015-03-15 22:07:00 I wonder if it somehow exacerbates it...

What might be interesting to do is run Wireshark on your PC, and see what kind of traffic is going on just before the problem occurs. www.wireshark.org

My to-do list includes looking at the router log and the event viewer - which I'm about to do. If they don't show anything then a deeper dig might be worth it. Still no hangups today...

1395579 2015-03-16 02:03:00 I came back to the PC to a lockup. Interestingly this time I couldn't even ping the router. The home security box is not connected. I've attached a couple of entries from the event viewer. I can't attach the router log atm as the smallest file size I can get is about 130k. I could probably filter it - I have practically everything selected - see other attachment. If I can remove any categories that would make it smaller and easier to analyse.

Any insights gratefully received.

1395580 2015-03-16 02:08:00 Upload the logfile to Google Drive or something?

Searching Google for "AtcL001" comes up with a lot of people who seem to have the same problem as you.
Their solution;

"...Turning off "Task Offload" was the solution for me.
(Local Area Connection > Properties > Configure > Advanced > set Task Offload value off)"

1395581 2015-03-16 02:28:00 Upload the logfile to Google Drive or something?oooh, sounds a bit technical... I actually think I could prune it significantly by filtering.

Anyway, I've turned Task Offload off. Of course it may not lock up again for another 24 hours (and maybe never).

Found one thread amost exact same problem you are having, same solution.Will be interesting to see if it has any effect on the Other computers as well ?

1395583 2015-03-16 03:47:00 Yes, I found that link as well. I made the change on the main PC and I'll leave it for a day or so, then I'll do the same on the laptop, then I'll plug the (metaphorical) red cable back in.

Watch this space...
