1383540 2014-09-12 20:29:00 Longer life now probably owes a great deal more to better plumbing than to better medicines.

Genes first of all.
Second, antibiotics. Stopped people dying of what we class as minor infections now. Not to mention things like TB, syphilis and so on....
Third vaccinations - prevented a lot of things.
Fourth, as you say, plumbing....or at least better waste disposal and water treatments.

1383541 2014-09-13 02:20:00 Makes one wonder why it is that we live 50 years longer than in the past, could it be modern medicine ?

It could be, but it doesn't change what you said - businesses exist primarily to make profit.

That's when men were men, oh for the good old days.

Then there is the placebo affect. Worth a look at.

Well the Saudi Arabians are right into “Head Amputations”. ;)

“The Saudi Ministry of Justice has announced the execution of 26 individuals since August 4. In the seven months prior, 15 executions were carried out, bringing the total number to 41 so far this year. However, there were no executions during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan this year between June 28 and July 28.”

Unfortunately, to date there have been no survivors. :groan:

Genetics plays no role in longer life expectancy, they change over thousands of years.

The bigggest change in life expectancy since WW2 is down to a marked reduction in infant and child mortality from public health measures and vaccination plans.

Then antibiotics including anti Tb drugs.

So if you have good genes and I have bad, I am going to live longer than you?

logic somewhat retarded me thinks.

1383548 2014-09-17 07:42:00 Cured their colds though, didn't it? Dropped their cholesterol levels and blood pressure too. It should be put on our Parliamentary Health Plan. ;)

1383549 2014-09-17 19:32:00 For some of you the statins are wonderful. However, in my case they are just terrible! Aches, pains, nausea, light-headedness etc. Much worse in my opinion than the cholesterol. Anyone with other remedies?
Hi Bryan. Did / does the doctor know that you experienced the above side effects? Some statins (I'm not going to name names in case I get myself into trouble with Pfizer etc.) are more likely to give you cramps than others. What I normally recommend is:

1) Have a chat with your doctor / nurse and see if they can prescribe a trial of other statins. In New Zealand, Pravastatin, Atorvastatin and Simvastatin are currently subsidised (off the top of my head)
2) Consider taking Co-Enzyme Q10 supplement. They can considerably alleviate the aforementioned side effects in a lot of cases
3) Consider asking the doctor to prescribe non-statin based cholesterol-reduction medications. There are alternatives such as Ezetimibe, Bezafibrate etc. that can help to improve your cholesterol profile
