2015-03-14 01:46:00 | Suggestion: Log Into the Router - Click on System Monitor > log Have a look through the log files to see what was happening (if it says) during the times or leading upto the outages. It may give some sort of hint. Unless its something useless like -- Lost connection  Wanna Experiment ( you can always put it back if it doesn't work) ???? I "think" you may be close with the comment If I set up a continuous ping (ping 8.8.8.8 -t) the connection seems to stay alive as long as the ping is happening. It is almost like something is going to sleep. Had a problem once and when talking to Telstra a "off the cuff" suggestion WAS the actual answer. ( Thats a different story) Try altering the time out for idle -- fiesta.gamigo.com

2015-03-14 02:14:00 | Is that common? I've never had any timeout\idle issues like that myself. | Agent_24 (57) | |
2015-03-14 02:51:00 | OK, I've changed the idle value from 15 to -1 (no timeout). It occurs to me it might be more instructive to change it to a very low non-zero value, to see if that makes the problem worse. I'll do that - change it to 2 mins. It looks like I have to enable the logging on my Router, and the reporting is done via email. I'm not quite what it is asking me for - see the attachment. I've circled what I'm not sure about.6289

2015-03-14 03:13:00 | Can you change the log mode to something other than remote?Well done. Yes I can. I've set it to local, and now it doesn't want the syslog server etc. There is still a dropdown arrow by mail server but it doesn't go anywhere. One slightly odd thing: at the bottom of the screenshot it has the option "clear log after sending mail" with the default as enabled, and the admonition "settings are invalid when disabled" - what settings? (that was a rhetorical question - I'll set it to enabled). I rebooted after setting the timeout to 2 mins and then waited 10 mins after the desktop came up and nothing stopped.

2015-03-14 03:25:00 | Damn - just missed the edit window. OK I think I have the logging sussed. I had to also enable email logging and provide logon details etc. Then the other screen showed my mail server. (sometimes it is actually useful to read the manual. :) )

2015-03-14 04:40:00 | No need for that type of language please -- How dare you :p :lol:My lovely late wife always said I was a completely non-typical male as I usually read the manual before I even connect something up. Well, changing the timeout to 2 mins seems to have had absolutely no effect. I even disabled my Outlook automatic send/receive to not confuse things.

2015-03-14 05:03:00 | Chill mentioned in Post #17 about the other devices when the connection drops. -- Didn't see exactly the end result of that, so what happens ? As Mentioned before It looks like you have actually found a part of the problem / solution -- its disconnecting someplace when no activity, if there's a continuous ping to keep it alive its OK.. So the big question is "whats" dropping in a time of no activity (blimey that sounds technical ) lol Sorry its errrrrrrrr relaxing time ;) What I was suggesting before Re the log files is whether the connection to the PC was dropping OR is the router dropping your ISP connection ? Suggestion-- when it drops again, do a IPCONFIG in a CMD, see if the computer is receiving a IP address from the Router. If it is, then you still should be able to see the others on your LAN. If not, while its only a test, give the PC a Static IP, it "may" just hold. Stating the "obvious" :D its still not been determined where the problem actually actually is.

2015-03-14 08:32:00 | Been away from the PC for about 4 hours - no hangups. I have no idea what is going on. Because it hasn't stopped I haven't been able to verify Chill's suggestion. I'll check out the logs and report back. I'll just take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone for sticking with me - we'll get there in the end!
