PJ Most Linux Downloads will run from a CD/DVD (live). If you wanted it to run from within windows you would need a Virtual Machine. ( doing that later actually) ;)

Heres a simple way. Download what ever Distro you want to try. it will come as a XXXXXXXXXXX .iso and no that's not lots of porn.iso :p

Put in a blank Disc into the optical Drive ( making sure its the right type, meaning if the Distro is under 700MB a CD will do, if its over 700MB you need a DVD)

Go to your download - RIGHT click it - Burn Disk Image - A windows opens, click burn-- go make a cuppa while it does it :)

Once burnt, make sure the disc is in the drive, boot from disc === Live Linux

This is from W7, but 8 -8.1 is the same:

6271

Note: Burning to a USB drive is a different process.

W...Have done this as far as "once burnt" . Did not see anything like Peazip. I assume that what I have on the DVD is the ISO not extracted. Is this correct? Have I missed a stage? PJ

1395164 2015-03-10 06:01:00 W . . . Have done this as far as "once burnt" . Did not see anything like Peazip . I assume that what I have on the DVD is the ISO not extracted . Is this correct? Have I missed a stage? PJ Ignore the Peazip, thats just the zipping program I use, and is in the list of items when right clicking and showing the menu .

If you right clicked the ISO - Burn Disk Image, you will have gotten a window like this (ignore the image name in the pic, its just a image I have handy, yours will say what ever version the linux ISO is):

6273

Once that appears ( and you have a blank Disc in the drive) click on burn -- it will burn the ISO ( automatically unpack) to the Blank CD or DVD -- when its finished, you can then boot from the New CD/DVD you just created .

It wont effect Windows 8 . 1 UNLESS actually install it, most of the time they boot from the CD/DVD and on the desktop is a Icon to install . DONT click that other wise it will install, but you get several warning .

1395165 2015-03-10 06:09:00 The other option, but its more difficult to setup, is to run Linux in A Virtual Machine.

Heres Linux Mint ( and two other OS's) in a VM on Windows 8.1

1395166 2015-03-10 18:55:00 Good on you Poppa John for giving it a go!
I actually like the virtual machine option best; that's me personally, maybe not for everyone - it seems tidier.
Here's a link you might find useful, if you want to pursue it

I guess it'll work equally well in Win 8.1

1395167 2015-03-11 04:06:00 W... Have d/l Linux mint to DVD. The "Burn" didn't look like your picture. However there was a burn icon there & I did that. The DVD shows that the content is an ISO. Properties show d/l of 1.3GB which suggests to me that it has not extracted. What now? PJ Poppa John (284)
1395168 2015-03-11 04:48:00 One of the "negative aspects" of Linux is there are so many different Distros .

Depending on what you downloaded, and "if" you have any other ISO software installed will depend on what it looks like .
I've downloaded Linux mint ( one variant of it) and this is the name/what it looks like:
6280

Being 1 . 3GB you would need a DVD .

This is done from a W8 . 1 PC, but W7 is exactly the same process:

Right click the ISO - Left Click "Burn Disk Image"
6284

and you'll get:

6281

Make sure you have a blank DVD in drive, click BURN and you'll see a progress bar:

6282

Once burnt it often spits out the DVD .

To view the contents, put the DVD back in, and it usually auto plays and opens, if not go into Computer, double click the optical drive, and you will see the DVD contents ( or similar) :

6283

If you want to run Linux From the DVD, with the DVD in the drive, simply reboot . As long as the Computer is set to have the Optical drive as the first boot device you will boot into Linux ( from the DVD) If not then you will have to press what ever key your mother board needs to select the boot menu, and select optical drive .

Note: this is how Linux can rescue data if Windows stuffs up in case of corruption . :)

PJI'll defer to people with more knowledge than me (Wainui....?) but it sounds like you gave copied the iso file to the DVD rather than "burnt the iso". You need to make sure you are using the right options when you do the burn. Fortunately DVDs are reasonably cheap, so you haven't lost much.

HA! I submitted the reply and lo! Wainui was there before me.

Burn the contents of the ISO not the .ISO file itself
