1395954 2015-03-10 21:49:00 I have a cheap netgear 2 bay NAS and am very underwhelmed by it. I particularly don't like that you have to register it online and have an internet connection to get it working which then ties it to you personally. If I wanted to sell it I have to figure out how to de-register it etc. I also don't like the NAS software it comes with and the very slow file transfer speeds over the network, less than half normal PC-PC transfer speeds on the same connection. Personally I ended up removing the drives and putting them into one of my PC's. Originally I had thought to use it for automatic system image backups of my 2 PC's but never got that to work reliably and gave up on it.

Not sure if that's helpful except to say be careful of cheap NAS solutions. I had multiple reasons for giving up on mine but maybe it'll find some use again one day.

Would you have the time to explain the difference between these two?

You do have the option to Register, but you don't have to, you can skip that part.

With the Netgear you have the options to allow internet /Cloud access OR like I set them up usually offline Mode, which means its only available within your LAN, you dont need to register.

Last one I setup in a business, it had 3 computers at the same time transferring data to the NAS, it has Gigabit ports, the bottle neck was the Router, it couldn't take any more.
As for the user interface ?? you serious  Its simple and well explained, again maybe you have an older version. Take a look at www.trustedreviews.com

1395958 2015-03-11 00:32:00 Mine's a Netgear stora support.netgear.com It does require an internet connection for initial setup and the software is nothing like what you linked.
It works but it's really slow and at the time I was using windows 7 and didn't realise it wouldn't back up to a network drive without 3rd party software unless you have the pro version. You can use windows networking and ignore the software, that speeds things up a bit but it's still much slower than normal with transfer speeds in the 10-20Mbps range as opposed to the normal 60+ speeds I get between PC's mainly due to WD green drives being the bottleneck.

I'll probably stick an old 1TB drive in it and put my music collection on it so it's not totally wasted.

Yeap as you found out, same product. One thing to note is if you want to mirror the 2 drives then the real storage is half what is listed by them. (so 3TB)

1395960 2015-04-13 07:45:00 If you have a spare PC laying about have you given any thought to using FreeNAS?

I have it running on a C2Quad box here, I have 4 x 2TB WD disks for storage (2 green and 2 black).

I am using it as a backup target for EaseUS Todo backup workstation. Works a treat and has heaps of features such as replication, raid etc.

Initial setup in terms of time depends on how intricate you want the system to be. I'm using pretty straight forward config with 2 separate shares (made up of 2 disks each).

I rarely have to go into it to change anything and the update process for keep FreeNAS current is pretty straight forward.

Cheers,

1395961 2015-04-13 19:36:00 After spending a lot of time researching I have decided to go with a simple WD My Cloud as this suffice for my office atm. The private requirement for any media(sharing a NAS) is so little it wasn't worth spending more at this time. The use of a WD MyBookWorld for the last few years has been reliable and the price is very affordable.
Thanks to all of you for your contributions.
