1395151 2015-02-26 21:23:00 I have tried to d/l 3 versions to put on a stick to trial. Not having much luck so far. I am happy enough with W8.1 but wanted to look at Linux to |play around" 7 see what it is all about. just to keep my brain active.
A long time ago I was given a 5 CD pack of Ubuntu when it first came out. I gave them all away except to keep one for me. So...please somebody tell me where I put it? PJ

It is updated every year or so PJ so you should download one of the suggested versions above anyway. It would be more likely to do what you want.

1395153 2015-02-26 21:36:00 Download one of the ISO's and try this www.pendrivelinux.com
Haven't tried it myself, just found it recommended on the linux MINT site.

I might grab a spare USB drive and try one myself.

1395154 2015-02-26 22:31:00 On the Pendrive page, 2nd line it asks for an "ISO" where does this come from? PJ Poppa John (284)
1395155 2015-02-26 23:02:00 Download an ISO from one of the links people posted earlier. For MINT go here www.linuxmint.com choose 32 or 64 bit, scroll down to the NZ mirrors and click one.
Or to save you the trouble here they are From Xnet
64 bit mirror.xnet.co.nz
32 bit mirror.xnet.co.nz

1395156 2015-03-08 08:15:00 Like IanHNZ I have to admit defeat trying to get any version of Linux to operate. I admit defeat.

I tried to follow Wanuitech's instructions but no go. Nothing wrong with the instructions , my understanding & comprehension of the required process isn't there anymore.

To think that I was once a very good diagnostic electrician who could machine repair with the best of them...I find very depressing that minor computing skills evade me.

Thanks for all the advice. PJ

ps Thank heavens for the spellchecker pj

PJ, the first time I tried to install a Linux distro I came oh so close to wiping my Windows partition. Trying something new can be challenging for anyone :)

Despite my well known aversion to Linux, it is still worth trying. As I said in an earlier post, I'd suggest PCLinuxOS. You can get it here (www.pclinuxos.com). I used the MATE desktop, but that doesn't mean you have to. Tony (4941)
1395159 2015-03-08 09:28:00 I tried that pendrive app with linux mint and it works really well, only thing is it will not find the .iso unless you put it in the same place as the program which is not terribly obvious.
Linux mint cinnamon and mate both woked impressivley well on my 2nd pc and booted up faster than windows 8 off the SSD.

1395160 2015-03-08 09:35:00 Of course you can also download an .iso and the burn it to a DVD and boot from that. Maybe you would finds that easier? You might have to change the boot order in your PC BIOS so the DVD drive is looked at first. Tony (4941)
