1383766 2014-09-13 12:25:00 Funny both Plod and Billy mention speeds lowering. Noticed myself when going away to the inlaws, or just general driving about on the motorways, that even though the Speed limit is 100, most traffic is quite happy to flow along between 80 -90 Km/hr.

I know when in Aussie a few years back everyone was under the Speed limit, made a comment to the owner of the place we were staying at, and he said you dont want to speed, the cops apparently really jump on speeders, and the fines are large.

1383767 2014-09-13 21:13:00 Since I only live 4km from my place of work I sold my car a week after starting there gary67 (56)
1383768 2014-09-14 03:03:00 I watch my fuel economy closely and I'm disappointed if I don't get 700+ K's on a 55 litre fill (900K's on a down-country trip, 2.3 litre Mazda 6 SW). I usually cruise at an indicated 90km/hr, which is actually around 95km/hr according to the occasional speed check, and I always pull over to let faster drivers pass. However, in recent times I have been surprised by the number of drivers now travelling at speeds well under the limit on Auckland's motorways, and on a recent trip to Hamilton hardly any cars passed me on the motorway or the expressway.

Maybe petrol prices are finally hitting home?

Cheers

Seems very economical for a 2.3 l. About 13l/k (36 mpg) for your 700 k's. My Odyssey 2.3 did did 260k per half tank - noted three times (not sure of tank volume) at 90k driving. But I think significantly higher mpg than your's?

i have noticed that. i typically cruise at 100kph, tho happy to sit at 80-100kph, and even my old slow thing i still end up passing a lot of traffic.
but even tho they drive slower, dosn't meant they are any better. still get harassed by tailgater's, they don't over take cars in front they just like to harass. half the time they over take and then slow down slower than what you where driving at!

but spring as arrived and silly season will kick off soon and there will be no shortage of people being scraped off the road.

Mine is a 2003 Sportwagon and is coming up 200,000km. Last long trip was Auckland to Cable Bay in Northland, we didn't use toll roads and did some touring around while up there. Trip counter said 764km return, low-fuel light wasn't on and the refill was 55 litres for just under 14 km per litre, or a smidgin over 7.1 litres per 100km. That was a hilly trip, and on a trip to Palmerston North it turned in 900km/55 litres. Cruise control helped on that one and kept us steady on 95km/Hr.

However, we recently returned to Palmerston North for a funeral and as we were running late, I got up to 130 km/h on the back roads into palmy (following a very stroppy but extremely competent woman driver) so fuel economy dropped to "let's not even think about about it" levels. :(

1383772 2014-09-16 19:10:00 My Ka does 50 plus mpg on trips. But I normally just use it for work and fill it up every 6 weeks. prefect (6291)
1383773 2014-09-20 23:02:00 Wow. I'd also thought that motorway speeding had declined.

Auckland traditionally consisted of people consistently doing 110+ in most lanes, with nut cases charging across 4 lanes at once to nip into an off ramp that they were totally ill prepared for.

The dumb lane changing still happens, but the pace of the traffic is a lot more sedate.

So is this just a reaction to fuel prices? Or a consequence of policing? Or a reflection of the economy, or the elimination of "legal highs" affecting road users, or tougher licencing for young drivers?

Whatever. Mellowing out on the gas pedal is good for all concerned.
