This is one argument from the other side.

1383521 2014-09-09 20:22:00 Well I know a few people who had immense problems caused by those drugs...the side effects are terrible, all for a theory.

I won't list it all, it would be huge but it was very interesting......at one point with one of them they had him lined up for bypass surgery....this has now been cancelled and he has been told his arteries are all fine.

And his symptoms on that were digestive related. He stopped taking the stuff, all his weird illnesses disappeared.

Medicine has a history of weird stuff being used, and dubious "research" methods being used until the right info was found.
In 100 or 200 years the modern world will look back and laugh at some of the things we came up with.

1383523 2014-09-10 01:40:00 I'm not an expert but I'd say try a better diet and exercise first Agent_24 (57)
1383524 2014-09-10 03:59:00 It doesn't really matter either way, anything that helps to reduce the human population can only be a good thing. :devil Terry Porritt (14)

I suspect that our oldies on here don't want to think of negative possibilities.

1383526 2014-09-11 22:29:00 After years of attempts to get my cholesterol down via diet and exercise, my GP finally admitted that some people simply can't control their cholesterol levels that way. Apparently a LOT of people cannot lower their cholesterol via diet and exercise. My GP suggested statins, and talked me through the pros and cons. At the end, I asked her whether she would take them if she was in my position, and she was definite that she would. So I did. Presto, my cholesterol levels came down to a reasonable level.

I have atrial fibrillation, which raises the risk level for a stroke quite significantly, so it seemed like a no brainer for me to try to remove one of the risk factors if I could. No regrets thus far...

1383527 2014-09-12 00:57:00 Apart from the side effects that some people get from taking statins, there seems to be questions as to whether having high cholesterol actually is a risk factor for atherosclerosis ie "hardening" of the arteries leading to strokes and heart attack.

Pctek implied this in her post with the comment "all for a theory", and Cicero posted a link putting doubt on statins. If you Google there are heaps of screeds casting doubt on the use of statins.

Most GPs from what I gather, appear to be operating within the current accepted wisdom, and are concerned about high cholesterol.

It seems the jury is out on the matter.

1383528 2014-09-12 01:52:00 The Pharmaceutical industry have a vested interest in us .

All the movies I have seen, suggest they push medicine in the name of profit, not our wellbeing.
