1383009 2014-09-01 11:24:00 The nut houses were closed down to provide more MPs, although some of our MPs might have struggled with the written test to get in the nut house. R2x1 (4628)

1383011 2014-09-01 20:48:00 Mine work pays well. What's happened to the proceeds of that work?
He left his flat and was living in his car - so without the expense of rent where was that portion of his benefit being spent?
He sold his car - so where had he spent the proceeds of that sale?

I suspect he's blown his money, and his brain cells on drugs. .

Perhaps he wasn't actually a miner, there are mine jobs that don't actually do the extractions Who knows.
Without the expense of rent his benefit would have been cut and he would bno longer have received an accommodation supplement.
How much did he get for the car? Perhaps he had to pay off debt, perhaps he just caught up on things he hadn't been able to afford.

Supported Living payment: Single, 18 years or over $257.75 Weekly
Assuming he qualified, a skin disease doesn't mean you do, you have to be unable to work 10 hours to qualify or be blind or terminally ill, so probably not.

Most likely Job Seekers: Single, 25+ years $209.06 Weekly

1383012 2014-09-01 21:28:00 And on Job Seekers at $209.06 Weekly, let's say he payed $200 board (Share of flat) when he was there, his acommodation supplement would be approx: $45.00 a week.

1383013 2014-09-01 22:33:00 The series of articles make it sound like he quit his job in Aus, and moved back home to bludge off the system for a while. Great plan if that's the case. inphinity (7274)
1383014 2014-09-01 23:04:00 He was obviously mentally unwell

so why hammer him for making poor life decisions .
I would have thought someone living in a car, or homeless, would have been top of the list for a helping hand via wellfare or mental health services .

1383015 2014-09-01 23:18:00 This morning Minister Paula Bennett told TVNZ's Breakfast programme how Tully had been getting help from Work and Income and was offered further assistance, which he had rejected.

"At Work and Income he had been getting everything he had been entitled to.

"He had been offered a lot of assistance in a lot of different ways that he had turned down. He had been offered accommodation and things but he was pretty fixated on one particular house that was never going to go to him because it was marked for a family."

I agree, given the history, why weren’t Mental Health Services involved?

As for Paula Bennett defending the situation, I guess it is hardly likely for a politician, of any persuasion, to lambast their own department.

1383017 2014-09-01 23:49:00 I agree with DeSade, the blame rests squarely on the man with the gun.
Being homeless in NZ except in rare and extreme cases (perhaps this was one of those but I doubt it) is a choice. Taking a gun and shooting people is also a choice.
You can't blame other people for the choices you make. Sure WINZ and it's employees can be right pricks at times but that doesn't make it their fault.

This man is/was on a sickness benefit and entitled to the same allowances as all the other people in that situation, it sounds to me more like he refused to accept any help from WINZ that didn't fit what he wanted rather than them refusing to offer any help. The fact that he had been trespassed from WINZ shows that he was a difficult person to deal with.

My Mother lived for 10 years on a sickness benefit at the end, lived in a housing corp house, paid all her rent and bills, and always managed to buy presents for all her children & grand children. Sure it's not an easy life and requires some discipline and budgeting but it's definitely possible to survive on a benefit and not live in a van.

1383018 2014-09-02 00:49:00 So based on todays new information, not only did he decide stop working to come home to bludge, he wanted specific accommodation handed to him and decided when he was offered accommodation elsewhere that he'd shoot some people and screw up multiple families. Even more brilliant. Yes, I agree, this nutcase should've been picked up earlier and dealt with, but oh no, you can't be mean. inphinity (7274)
