| 1396135 | 2015-03-10 20:45:00 | I am having some issues balancing the sound output of my 5.1 system. No matter what I do I am constantly adjusting it, one second its too loud and the next it is barely a whisper and this is the same with games and other media. I think at least in the short term I need a new speaker system that does not rely on a sub, removing the sub might allow me a 'nice' level of sound without pissing off the rest of the house. However a system without a sub is effectively limiting my choices to 2.1 and that could be ok with a decent set and good sound. So any recommendations on either solving the issue or replacement speakers? |

I tried a surround sound setup on my PC before 5.1 became common so I had (still have actually) a cambridge soundworks 4.1 speaker system. I thought it would make games more immersive and help with telling where sounds were coming from but it really didn't, what it did do was take up a lot of space and cause me to run wires all over the place. Now I use a 20W T-amp ($60 from E-bay) and a pair of bookshelf speakers (wharfedale diamond 9, used to be my rears in the 5.1 setup) in straight stereo (no sub). It sounds better than any PC speaker system I've ever heard and I would not go back. I listen to more music on the PC than the 5.1 setup in the lounge I watch movies on because it sounds at least as good if not better and is more convenient. I find you quickly stop noticing the lack of surround for games/ movies/ TV also. Maybe you miss out on the huge explosion noises but otherwise nothing lost in my opinion. My setup would probably have cost a bit but I already had the speakers and the amp was cheap from E-bay. T-amps are awesome value for a very nice sound. I recommend a proper set of bookshelf speakers and an amp over a set of PC speakers any day. If you go shopping in 2nd hand stores for old stereo equipment you may find something decent for cheap. |

If you're just after some decent 2.0 speakers, I'd look at something like the following, depending on the price range.
