1395908 2015-03-07 22:41:00 Son went to open Carrara 7 and it will not load because there is a dll missing. Ran Ccleaner but that didn't find it.
He googled it and search results show many sites to download it from. Would it be safe to get it from one of them?

1395909 2015-03-07 23:05:00 NO -- some of those sites are fake, and you take a big risk doing so, you never know what you'll be installing.

Some options.

Run the sfc /scannow command --- See if windows will replace the missing DLL files. ( heres how if not to sure support.microsoft.com)

Reinstall the program that the Missing DLL is from in this case Carrara 7.

What is the exact Dll Message, ( missing file) you may be able to extract it from your windows DVD.

geek Stuff :D DLL stands for “Dynamic Link Library”. They are files that allow programs to interact with Windows, if one or more are missing / damaged you will get that error.

1395910 2015-03-07 23:27:00 Thank you WT, I just ran scannow and no missing files were found. Son could reinstall Carrara but that would mean going through the computer and trying to find all the associated licences which would much too time consuming.

I do have the Win 7 DVDs, so that may be an option.
What about a system restore, maybe helpful?

1395911 2015-03-08 01:13:00 Yep system restore wont hurt (or shouldn't) often it does fix things like this and can save a mountain of time repairing otherwise. Restore it back to before the problem happened. Could be something was removed or some update possibly could have caused a problem. ( wont be the first or last time that happens) :) wainuitech (129)
1395912 2015-03-08 02:18:00 I have tried to run system restore but it was unsuccessful. It told me to disable anti virus and try again, which I did, but still wouldn't restore.

Should I try it in safe mode with AV disabled?

1395913 2015-03-08 03:43:00 Cant hurt in safe mode . Had that happen before, says system Restore didn't work when in fact it had.

What you also may want to try is running chkdsk through the drive. Some of the options / switches technet.microsoft.com or open Computer, right click the drive Properties / tools - in error checking -check, tick boxes, you'll need to reboot to let it run through - if you do this, DONT stop it, could take a while depending how full the drive is.

Again- Whats the exact error / missing dll its asking for ?

1395914 2015-03-08 04:37:00 Tried running system restore in safe mode with networking, no luck there, all system restore points had disappeared! Tried again in normal, no sys restore points except one going back to 2012, huh? As I had disabled AV, I ran Nod and M/bytes, nothing detected.

Missing DLL is A3DSkdDLL.dll
Son is almost ready to reinstall Carrara program and go through all the hassle of having to do all the searching for licences for all the updates etc! (please be reassured, he is most grateful for any help offered.)

Cheers, LL

Just a thought, I backed up the registry in Ccleaner after I scanned for issues, approx 2 months ago, that was just after son said he last used Carrara. Is it possible to retrieve that file from the back up I saved, if it is there?
lakewoodlady (103)
1395915 2015-03-08 05:27:00 Highly doubt the registry restore would do any good, may in fact make things worse.

Are you SURE thats the right letters/numbers for the Missing dll ? tried looking it up and cant find anything with those exact combinations. They have to be 100% correct if not anything can happen. and certainly wont fix the problem :(

Some programs don't need a full reinstall, they do have an option to repair, which means they check to make sure everything is as it should be.

1395917 2015-03-09 01:30:00 Latest update, I have fixed it! I found the missing dlls on a backup ext HD and restored them from there. There were a half dozen of them. So that made my day! Carrara 7 is all good now. Son owes me a wine or two methinks.....
