1395253 2015-02-27 03:18:00 Have recently installed a laptop running win 8.1 onto the LAN.
There are XP and Win7 computers also connected and I'd like to file share between them all.
They all appear in the (each's) Explorer view.

The XP machine under "Windows Security" offered a dialog to enter User/password with a drop down option for User.
Picking the first one (looked like the name of the XP machine) worked. But the Win7 "Windows Security"
that come up after clicking LAPTOP under Network kept repeating "Login Failure: unknown username or bad password".
I know the password is correct and tried various user names. Eventually one brought up the hourglass for a while
then another dialog "Windows cannot access \\LAPTOP". The diagnostics say only to make sure the other machine is on (it is)
or to contact my network administrator (there isn't one)

The Laptop and XP machines are OK in both directions and the Laptop can see (and copy to) the Win7 machine.
Both XP and Win7 are OK, the only problem is the Win7 machine seeing the laptop.

Any help appreciated.

1395255 2015-02-27 23:12:00 Ahhh... thank you Speedy. It was Off in Win7 but On in Win8. Now win7 can see 2 folders Users\Default and Users\Public.
However XP can also see one called "Kirk" which includes the Desktop and others, is there another adjustment so Win7 can see the same as XP ?

1395256 2015-02-27 23:54:00 Is XP home or Pro?

If you want to share a separate folder. Create one (then under its properties) select share and everyone in Win 7 and 8

1395257 2015-02-28 02:53:00 It's XP Pro. It can share to/from both Win7 and the laptop. The laptop likewise with the XP and Win 7.
Problem was just Win7 not seeing Laptop (which is now does) but not the same content as XP

For a test I set a new folder on the laptop to share with Everyone. This was a big mistake as suddenly neither XP or Win7 could access the laptop at all.
I removed that share and folder and it reverted back to how it was. Does that make sense to you ?
