Running any one first and then the other and MS seems to think defragler leaves a lot to be desired and Piriform seems to think the same. So who is doing the best defrag job ? Cheers, Phil H. |

| 1395015 | 2015-02-25 04:47:00 | Well, hit or myth, all I can say is that a recent defrag (Defraggler) of Mrs T's computer saw an absolutely massive increase in speed. She has been complaining about the long wait for any action for months, it was slow to boot and painfully slow to open programs, so I finally gave in and now her programs open in a flash etc. Defrag took some hours, but it was worth the wait. In my experience, testing the Windows vs Piriforms Defraggler, I found Defraggler did a much better job of doing it while the system was in-use, whereas the windows one complained loudly then gave up. There is absolutely 100% a performance decrease to be had from a fragmented HDD, based largely upon seek times and multitasking. Basic math agrees with me. The link to the *actual* defragmenter article inside of the article you linked, is gone. Memory defragmenting is a complete and utter myth, I absolutely wholeheartedly agree there. |

Windows 7 (and I assume 8 also?) does a background defrag periodically during idle time making it largely pointless to do it manually. www.howtogeek.com I just checked this machine and the two mechanical drives were both showing as 0% fragmented, I've never run a defrag on it and it's nearly 2 years old. |
