Want to Lube the rail on my garage door opener. Have used silicone spray in the past and over spray went over everything in the garage. made a hell of a mess.
Looking for the liquid that is in the aerosol that I can brush on.

Don't want to use oil as I think it can affect the plastic runner.

That is what I do and it works pretty well

1383711 2014-09-10 23:06:00 I bought a tube of Rocol silicone grease from Plumbing World years ago, useful for lubricating taps and rubber, or places where you dont want a petroleum based lubricant etc. It will see me out :)

An advantage of silicone grease is that it does not bleed oil out as a normal grease does....(edit) ie it will last forever in its container.

1383712 2014-09-10 23:44:00 Garage door openers need lubricating? Mine is 15 years old and doing fine without intervention from me. Mind you it's just a chain so I could oil it.
I suppose the wheels that run inside the rails on each side could use some lubricating in theory as well, again never touched them but I'd expect to lube the wheel not the rail it runs in.

I feel a sudden need to go have a look at my garage door.

1383713 2014-09-11 00:29:00 Your chances of buying silicone fluid are remote as it not usually sold in retail or domestic small volumes.
Your best bet is to use a conventional silicone aerosol spray into a small plastic beaker and preventing the spray escaping by masking the lid and then allowing the propellant to evaporate.
Another way is to buy a bottle of Ceraclean silicone protectant for ceramic top cooker hotplates, there is obviously not much silicone in the blend but the solvent will evaporate. PS don't buy the Ceraclean Cleaner!!!

1383714 2014-09-11 00:32:00 We use to apply Molykote (bit.ly) silicone paste (images) on packaging test equipment and machinery. Made by Dow Corning USA. They have a good range of specialist silicone products. Some listed here (bit.ly)with specs for other lubricants. kahawai chaser (3545)

Do you mean the centre rail of a Tiltadoor or the side runners? If you mean the centre rail, I was told by the installer not to lube this shiny rail, as any lube became sticky after a while, and caused problems. I learned this the hard way, and had to wash the rail with petrol. Advice was to keep the rail clean and shiny. Lack of friction between the metal rail and the plastic slider allows the door to operate properly. Just try giving everything a good clean first.

But will it penetrate all hinges etc.

You need the spray can as well.

It's the baring of the wheel that needs lube.

1383718 2014-09-11 03:31:00 I have latest door opener that uses a belt rather than a chain, very nice, like a Rolls Royce in operation. Cicero (40)
