1383510 2014-09-09 05:13:00 There seems to be two schools re preventing strokes with the help of Statins.

Some say they do more harm than good, probably from the natural medicine mob.

Then there are the doctors who are behind Statins, any thought on here?

Having high Cholesterol I choose to take it.

I've been taking Simvastatin for a number of years now with no apparent harm, it keeps my cholesterol level down to around 3.

1383513 2014-09-09 06:15:00 For some of you the statins are wonderful. However, in my case they are just terrible! Aches, pains, nausea, light-headedness etc. Much worse in my opinion than the cholesterol. Anyone with other remedies? Bryan (147)
1383514 2014-09-09 06:25:00 Don't know what my cholesterol levels are never had them checked so don't know gary67 (56)
1383515 2014-09-09 06:59:00 I take Lipitor with no side effects. However, they didn't help as I had a TIA then a stroke 6 hours later in July 2012. As I had had a hip relacement just a few days before and as they could find no reason why the stroke, they assume it was a clot from the operation. I now take Clopidogrel daily to keep my blood thin.

That's my train of thought, nothing wrong if you don't get it checked

1383517 2014-09-09 07:29:00 I was once on prescribed Statins. I had various side effects from them but when I asked the GP I had at the time if I could come off them, she said I'd probably be on them for the rest of my life.
A few months after that I was in hospital, where the surgeon immediately took me off them. I don't think or know if they had anything to do with the reason I was hospitalised but my GP went along with the surgeon's decision and didn't prescribe them after that.
That particular GP changed clinics and my new one said in some cases Statins may be advisable but not so for me. I was nodding away when I read Bryan's posting.
I have regular blood tests for another reason and my cholesterol levels are checked then. If my cholesterol levels were very high then I would be guided by my GP.

1383518 2014-09-09 08:28:00 Depends on wheter the stroke came from an aneurism or a clot. Give up meat and dairy at least a year before having the stroke and stay off it, choose your parents carefully etc. R2x1 (4628)
1383519 2014-09-09 09:54:00 Like Bryan I suffered lightheadedness with statins, so gave them up without telling anyone.

I then embarked on a healthier lifestyle and it really made a difference. (Except to my cholesterol figures, which I ignore.)

Healthy lifestyle =

- only 33ml of alcohol per day (2 bots x 5%)
- 1 x kiwifruit per day
- 130ml of probiotic yoghurt per day (1/7th of a carton of Symbio pouring yoghurt)
- between 2 and 7 km day of walking with a bit of running
