417159 2006-01-01 10:25:00 Need help so thought I would ask those with more knowledge

My partner has Win 98SE, an ATi grafix card has just been installed, and then she started getting freezes in Firefox. Partner likes to play a lot of Java based games sites (pogo.com, ionthunder, grab.com). During some of these games (no game in particular) firefox would freeze. Initially when it froze, it would give a Ddhelp error (page fault - have since forgotten what if any filename).
Heres what I have tried:
Updated ATi drivers to current (run drivercleaner as well in safe mode)
Reinstalled DirectX 9c
Installed latest java (from sun) - Update 6 I believe it is
Installed Firefox 1.5 (she was using 1.0.7 - had same issue with that too)
Turned down grafix acceleration in display properties to one bar above <none>
Am currently downloading an earlier sun java as I have seen online that after version 1.4.0.3(4?) that some ATi drivers do clash with java. After this I'm all out of ideas.

Have also run Nod32 and various spyware apps, reg cleaners (that I have used often) all in safe mode and cleaned up some issues (just in case)

Incidentally, got rid of Ddhelp error message, but Firefox still freezes at random points (sometimes game 1, sometimes game 5 or anywhere in between - no error message now)
Hopefully one of you has had this issue and fixed it????? One can only hope

417160 2006-01-02 00:04:00 Does the problem occur while using other browsers?

Maybe it's just a FF issue? Try Opera if you don't want to use IE... :)

If that doesn't work... hmm... reinstall Windows?

417161 2006-01-02 00:08:00 It may be the jave runtime... I have the latest too and recently I have noticed that when I quit an IE window that had a java app running in it the computer will somtimes beep once and then freeze. I have only just got the new runtime so maybe there's some problem with it??? Agent_24 (57)
417162 2006-01-02 05:01:00 I had a similar, though not identical, problem with an earlier version of Firefox.

The problem was finally identified as corrupt JavaScript in my Firefox profile.

With no knowledge of whether this was/wasn't fixable, I took the easy way out and created a new identity for myself - with a new profile. That solved the problem, even though I'd no idea why it arose in the first place.

(Actually,I see the old profile's still there, doing nothing & waiting for me to either fix it or delete it)

The different flavours of java can be confusing. And although I'm among the confused, I endorse suggestions it may be the culprit.

417163 2006-01-02 06:21:00 Problem resolved...

I downgraded J2SE to 1.4.0.03 (I hear 1.4.0.04 also works). Installed it, and voila.. no more freezing (so far anyway)

Thanx for the ideas though.. Opera also crossed my mind
