417063 2006-01-01 05:39:00 Any recommendations for free backup software? This stupid laptop doesn't have windows backup, and I need to get my data on DVD before I send this thing to Toshiba for repair. pixeldust (6619)
417064 2006-01-01 05:54:00 This the same laptop you are trying to swap/get rid of? Think you might just of lost any potential takers with your post. :p

XP Home does have the Microsoft back up program, but it is not installed by default if this was the program you were referring to. You can find here (support.microsoft.com) how to install it if that is your preference. There are variable opinions on how good that program is.

What DVD burning software do you have? They often include a backup option.

417065 2006-01-02 00:24:00 Hah - yes.. I need to remove that sig. I'm not going to get rid of this laptop until I have it sorted by Toshiba! Unfortunately I don't have the Windows install disks, so I'll have to use an alternative.

I have Sonic RecordNow installed, but the backup component isn't installed by default, you have to pay to upgrade for that.

Any other suggestions?

417066 2006-01-02 02:36:00 Winzip? Copy files to one folder and backup.
Use network to copy files across if you like or to CDRW or DVDRW.

417067 2006-01-02 03:05:00 Its the same for me. We have a DVD Burner (with the computer we just got) with Sonic Record Now, and you do have to pay to backup onto dvds i think. so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions before I resort to google or download.com?????

417068 2006-01-02 05:17:00 Use nero and just select your files that you want to keep. Or you can create an image of the whole partition if you would like to keep everything.... Prescott (11)
417069 2006-01-02 05:37:00 There is this program WinBackup 1.86 (www.backupanswers.com) which is free to use. I have never used it myself, but the interface looks easy to use. Jen (38)
