416933 2005-12-31 22:19:00 Using windows Xp and zone alarm pro, I try to access the tutorial in zone alarm and it tells me that I have to instal a plug in called Macromedia Flash Player. So I go through the next steps agreeing to their licence agreement etc., and up comes a panel saying that it is installing the plugin. The panel has an oblong slot with a sliding marker going from left to right supposedly indicating that the installation process is under way. One hour later the marker is still sliding but nothing else appears to be happening and after one hour I give up. Can anyone throw any light on this please ? heaton (3697)

Where is the macromedia site and what is the offline install version.
Are there any security risks with this programme. Thanks.

416937 2006-01-01 00:48:00 Here's how I'd do it.

Google macromedia.
Click on Flash Player Download site & follow instructions.
(There's a FAQ also)

As for security - it's on hordes of machines.
But anything can be insecure if your own setup isn't. ZoneAlarm is a good step, but you'll know that you need antivirus protection as well?.

416938 2006-01-01 01:15:00 Thanks all. Been doing a bit of further research and as far as I can see some plug ins are created by various computer geeks and these could be the source of nasties. I have AVG Prof virus protector but would this screen out any malicious stuff.
I am a bit paranoid I know but rather that than be caught napping.
What do other think ?

416939 2006-01-01 01:30:00 True, "some" plugins can be nasties. So you're wise not to trust unknowns.
But this is from a reputable site, which would certainly have received bad publicity by now if it goofed.
And your AVG should protect you.

(By the way, you can check problems like this on Google. Just enter the programme name & add the word Problems for a selection of opinions)

416940 2006-01-01 01:57:00 Macromedia Flash is very safe, just mostly annoying, thanks to over-enthusiastic advertisers.

From Internet Explorer
Tools... Manage Add ons

Enable Flash when a site requires it. When I'm finished using the site, I disable it again.

I hate animated ads on websites, so the first thing I do is this:

Tools... Internet Options... Advanced

Under Multimedia, turn off everything but "show pictures" and "dithering"

Dithering is not really needed on most PC's, but no harm on leaving it on. I don't watch videos via webpages, and I certainly don't want to hear some cheesy background music.
