416982 2005-12-31 06:51:00 People on this forum have enthusiastically debated this topic several times, to no real consensus. The two main contenders seem to be:

AVG Antivirus
Avast Antivirus

Both are free, and have free updates.

416988 2006-01-01 22:05:00 Recommend searching the PF1 forums, my first point of reference for most PC related questions . Wide range of views on many topics and an excellent place to start ones search . . .

my vote: Avast

And I will throw in Kerio for a free firewall . (requires XP)

(Also try Outpost if you have an older machine around runing windows ME . )

Cheers

416989 2006-01-02 00:18:00 I vote avast because its realtime scanner is better, it picks up viruses as soon as they come in that AVG only picks up on the next full scan.

but if your computer is fairly old I would use AVG on it as it doesn't scan as much stuff in realtime, so doesn't lag your computer up as much.

If the free ones were any good , would they be free?

I would suggest that A/V is one thing you don't get mean with.
I strongly reccomend NOD32
