416648 2005-12-30 19:44:00 Me too!

Unfortunately I know why - I got some SpyAxe infection yesterday, and spent 12 hours non-stop trying to get my machine to work.

It does - just. When Quay Computers opens for business, it's going there to have the experts fix it.

What a mess.

Maybe you have something similar?

Cheers
Tim

416649 2005-12-30 19:45:00 How did you find the SpyAxe?

It might be the same thing

416650 2005-12-30 19:48:00 A few common causes of shutdown problems are as follows
You haven't said what OS you are using so I'm assuming it's XP
After the usual virus & spyware checks try the following

Check APCI is enabled in the BIOS then
Click Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options tab.
If there is an APM Tab > Enable Advanced Power Management Support.
or
Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
Check to see if adobe type manager is there
if it is then remove it.
or
Disable the nVidia Driver Helper service.
or
If you have Roxio Direct CD installed, remove it

416652 2005-12-30 20:04:00 Machines very occasionally decide not to shut down due to some glitch . Just either push the reset button or hold down the power button for about 5 secs until the machine powers off .

If it happens again next time, then start checking for causes . :)

416653 2005-12-30 20:08:00 Just either push the reset button or hold down the power button for about 5 secs until the machine powers off. Done that about 3 times and still the same old drama :badpc: The_End_Of_Reality (334)

It is XP Pro SP2 I have done an Adware scan, done a virus scan lastnight but I am doing another one now.

Adobe type manager is not installed.

Neither is nVidia Driver Helper service, or Roxio Direct CD installed

416655 2005-12-30 20:33:00 Have you installed any new drivers or software lately?
Have you checked the Power options?
Try a system Restore back a couple of days
or do a system file check
Start > Run > sfc /scannow (have the xp cd in the drive)

416656 2005-12-30 21:12:00 Without getting into IRQ's and interrupts here which MAY be your actual problem, doing a scan for spyware and malevolent stuff is really quite a waste of time in regular boot mode . If you run in Safe mode and get negative results, then you have something over which to worry .

If one thinks for a moment . . . there are reasons why spyware likes to hide in the OPSYS or like the SONY DRM in the rootkit area . . . because it (the OPSY being used) cannot be modified or changed . . . including removing spyware that is attached to the OPSYS . This is one of the reasons for having to do a reboot after making a change to your system; that is when the changes take effect . The only time malware initializes is at reboot or cold start the next time .

(Not to be confused with seeing your security bells and whistles all sounding off when you "accidently" clicked on that website . . . . . this is when it enters and snuggles down to do it's damage the next time you log on) .

Different viruses hide in different areas, but most enter the operating system and wreck havoc there . Some may attach themselves to another program and it's not unheard of for them to wait in hiding in WORD or Internet Explorer to start their damage . Most however come in thru Internet Explorer . Some go straight to the BIOS or rewrite webpages, yet others are content to wait till their date of delivery (payload) comes up . A famous one is the Chernobyl Worm . It arrives anytime during the year (mostly in the first 3 months of the years anyway) and destroys the BIOS on April 15th, the anniversary fo the Chernobyl nuclear accident .

Been there .
Done it .
Reflashed BIOS too .

Running in safe mode will drop a lot of the non-essential programs and sub-calls that might be where the spy-stuff hides . If you scan while in safe mode the results are usually much better at removing after finding the culprit .

As a rule (mine, not necessarily anyone else's) I never run system restore . The baddies like to re-write themselves from that position too . . . they just return to reinfect over and over again . Then people are prone to think the anti-stuff is either finding nothing or is defective .

This NOT RUNNING system restore, is my position . . . but that's because I don't mind burning the whole system down . . . I have full-install discs anyway .

Hopefully your unstoppable computer will not need to be fdisk'd and re-installed . It is certainly a lot of work . I keep another 40 gig drive with a full opsys on it for those times when I need to get rid of something that has gone terribly wrong . I keep all data and add-on files on my RAID 0+1 or the JBODS .
