416578 2005-12-30 07:51:00 Does a multifunction printer need to have an ethernet port to be shared between two computers? Randolf (75)

416580 2005-12-30 08:51:00 Never heard of a printer that has ethernet port. You can simply attach it to a router (is it called router?)

Cheers :)

416581 2005-12-30 08:55:00 no, printer sharing can be acheived from either machine but this means the pc the printer is being shared from must be on.

you can use the usb connection on both machines and swap the cable all the time.
or
set one up with the usb connection and the other with the ethernet cable, therefore eliminating the need for the server pc to be turned on

how would you attach it to a router without an ethernet port?
maybe you're thinking of a print server

most decent multifunctions have an ethernet port now, quite a few have usb, ethernet and wireless, very handy

The HP Photosmart 3310 has one.

How do you think businesses had network printers for years?
Of course they do/did.

416585 2005-12-30 09:59:00 I used to share my HP 2300d printer between three computers, but as someone else has said, that requires the pc to which the printer is attached to be turned on so the other pc's can use the printer. This was a hassle as I am often away and my office is shut down.

I bought an el cheapo print server from DSE. This is plugged into the parallel port in the printer, and an ethernet cable goes from the print server to my adsl modem router. This is in turn connected to my wireless access point. Two computers in the house can use the printer wirelessly, and this works even if my computer in the outside office is turned off.

Configuration of the computers to use the print server isn't exactly intuitive, but after some head banging I got it to work.

BTW, in response to whoever said a printer would not have an ethernet port, many do, and you can buy a network card for many that do not come with them already installed. It is (or was) far cheaper to use the print server option - at least as far as HP printers are (or were) concerned. I once priced a card about two printers ago, and it was a ridiculous price. Things may have changed since then, seeing HP is now in the business of selling ink rather than printers... ;-)

They aren't quite that bad anymore, especially if you just buy the model with the Jetdirect card for a start. They are much tidier to deal with and can have their firmware's upgraded.

I've never liked printer sharing off a computer as you get the same annoying problems: people turn the host PC off and with USB connections they tend to stop working after some days (yep you just reconnect them ..but explaining that to people).
