416555 2005-12-30 03:38:00 Hi there: have a pc with an external modem connected to the Internet....also connected to a D-link DI-724P+.....and have a late model HP lap top with built in wireless. Things are going swimmingly well in all respects except Internet connectivity. That is I can share files between lap top and PC and print from the lap top to the printer connected to the the D-link.

I can think of no way to tell the lap top to use my dial up connection to go to the Internet. I even set up a gateway on the lap top and can actually see the connection speed going through the modem, just not use it.

Am wondering if it is a configuration setting on the D-link device?? or something else. (interestingly I took the lap top to work and was able to surf in the blin k of an eye connected to a Cisco wireless access point)

Any ideas?

(go on make my wife's day :nerd: )

416556 2005-12-30 04:50:00 What Windows version on the PC with the dial-up connection?

At a fist guess I would say the PC with the internet connection would need to be set to "bridge" the two networks, as you do not have a router in the dial-up setup that would do this as happens in a LAN based router system.

Not even certain that its possible, as both "networks" (dial-up connection and wireless) are totall separate.

But XP does have a bridging function, just not sure it works for a dial-up connected device.

416557 2005-12-30 10:30:00 HI there: May be something in what you say. Have wondered if the D-Link device is what is blocking access. The desktop is running XP SP2 Quiet (8950)
416558 2005-12-30 10:52:00 If the computer connected to the modem and wireless is running XP, you can setup internet sharing (ICS) by running the networking wizard on that computer. [Start / All Programs / Accessories / Communications / Network Setup Wizard]. Your network connection (to the wireless) will be allocated an IP of 192.168.0.1, so you may have to reconfigure the wireless. wuppo (41)
