So there is no shortage of noise. To cut a long story short, NZ is a very small economy and the NZ government has a shares in NZ Telecoms, add to this Telecoms is one of NZ largest employers and you have a lot of politicians making the right squeaking noises and no real action (yet). Keep in mind Telecoms monopoly is largely protected by NZ law (local loop issue) so it really is a political issue. We also don't have a large enough army to invade say mmmm Iran and steal there oil either, so we can't pay for better broadband that way either :P |

2006-01-02 02:11:00 | Read the Orcon Forums (forums.orcon.net.nz) Horrible ping times, severe traffic shaping (even old humble FTP), mucked up accounts and bizarre server outages. Thankyou for that gibler, I've been on their website but not on their fourms, I'll have a look at them!!!! ~Matt

2006-01-02 02:22:00 | Matty3 if going the Orcon way means you can get broadband , then go for it . I've been with Orcon for about 2 years and a while back they were cr*p, however things seem to have improved lately and I get a fairly constant 32K speed and their helpdesk seems ok Extreme laziness alone has prevented me swapping to i-hug Do consider how much data you may use tho, those Linux distros are quite large However your Dad will love how with broadband you can be on-line AND use the phone Mike I actually think he will, he just made me get off nearly 3 times so he could call and re-call people. Broadband would definently help!!!! ~Matt

2006-01-02 02:57:00 | Thanks everyone - after tearing my hair out by using my 10GB on Xtra in 2-3 days each month and asking them if I could increase my cap (no) I stumbling across this thread, read about IHUG. Went online , joined up and now waiting for them to turn me on (ewww errrr). Got the 40GB onpeak + 40GB offpeak plan and blow me down - uploads (about a third of my traffic) are NOT counted towards your traffic!!! I'm a heavy user of Bit torrent for TV programs (no movies or pirated games etc) and look forward to having high speed for half or more of my billing month!! Thanks everyone.

2006-01-22 13:12:00 | You are basically righ SurferJoe46t, however there are dozens of NZ forums full of complaints not to mention Radio and Some bad TV press. So there is no shortage of noise. I would have to disagree. Consumer revolt is the way to go, and, apart from a fair minority of geeks or people who at least partially know what they are on about, even when I was still in NZ, I never really read about it. If a proper issue was made that Telecom NZ is ripping us (I mean, you guys) off, then perhaps something would be done about it. Stand up and apply some freakin' pressure to those theives, wouldya? Companies that practice the tactics that TCNZ does get lynched anywhere else on the planet! The other alternative is to be taken over by someone else (to make an example of Finland's case, it was the oppressive Russians in the early 20th century) and create as many independant, yet interoperable phone providers as possible. I think that it's too late for NZ in that respect, though! While true, I could say the same about the largely independant economy of say, Finland, where students get 512/512 DSL to their apartment included in their government-subsidized rent. Hell, even Estonia (2m), Lithuania (3.5m), Latvia (2.5m) and Russia (200m, but less if we only count those that can afford to have a connection - and even in some remote areas they still get broadband, and you all know how big Russia is!) have better broadband options than New Zealand! Tallinn, Estonia is "teh shyt" when it comes to FREE (or at least, free-ish) citywide wireless coverage! Whilst these countries are actually connected by land, I still get my full-rate (50+MbPS at the office, 12MbPS at home) even when downloading from the USA or Asia. I usually only pull 2 to 4 megabits from Aus/NZ, though. Oh, and everyone in Europe thinks that data caps are absolutely ridiculous, by the way! We also don't have a large enough army to invade say mmmm Iran and steal there oil either, so we can't pay for better broadband that way either :P Neither do any of the countries I mentioned before. Even Russia can't really *afford* to do that much, though they certainly have the potential and could perceivably get the manpower.

2006-01-22 14:23:00 | Maybe Telecom has a small amount of reading to do. www.networkingpipeline.com This excerpt I found of particular interest: "We believe consumers are already paying to support broadband access to the Internet through subscription fees and, as a result, consumers should have the freedom to use this connection without limitations." Google has that absolutely right. We're all already paying through the nose for Internet access, especially compared with the low access prices in the rest of the world." While US centric, its quite true. Telecom is still owned (mostly) by an American bunch, isn't it?

2006-01-22 15:22:00 | I wonder why there is a speed limit restriction In new zealand.Wouldn't everybody be willing to join if there was no data cap?More money would be earned by telecom??Wouldn't it lower the price of broadband. If everybody was at flat rate broadband can new zealand isp handle the amount of bandwith that is required to support every family in nz? | Ninjabear (2948) | |
