416870 2006-01-01 00:35:00 Ihug. I'm on their 'Light" plan which gives me 10GB peak, and 10GB offpeak data at $49.95/month (with tolls). Does all I need, and more, at 2MBit speed - thoroughly recommend them.

If you don't mind me asking how much do you have to pay per month and what are the terms of the connection????? What about modem and installation fees?

416871 2006-01-01 00:39:00 The reason that I keep bringing up Orcon is because of the low connection on modem fees. In other words its free except for the $9.95 for the p&h of the modem and the $29 or something a month for it. If there is a high cost of installation we probably would'nt get it as we r on dial-up and my dad is okay paying $2 more a month for orcon, other than that it would be a no go for getting broadband probably.

416873 2006-01-01 08:06:00 This topic always reminds me of the question,"How long is a piece of string?" There is NO answer. All ISP are good & bad, depending on who you listen to. I am with NZs most hated one. There is not enough incentive from any of the others to make me change. Which is pretty sad really, no real competition. PJ :2cents: :2cents: Poppa John (284)
416874 2006-01-01 08:08:00 Orcon is great. Go for it! Oldferix (5581)
416875 2006-01-01 08:13:00 Having said all that, if I needed to change I would go to Orcon. PJ Poppa John (284)

Read the Orcon Forums (forums.orcon.net.nz)

Horrible ping times, severe traffic shaping (even old humble FTP), mucked up accounts and bizarre server outages.

416877 2006-01-01 08:50:00 I say Ihug as they don't traffic shape P2P at all like orcon does, although I understand Orcon P2P is still mostly ok.

If you don't need/want a large cap then almost any ISP will do as most plans are VERY similar excluding Ihug/Orcon (and one other I forget).

I understand Orcon has been a lot better in the last 4 months ish as I have a mate with them and seen others post they have been better lately. If you want a large cap 40 gig then Ihug $69 or 80gig $89. I wouldn't go with Orcon on a small cap as there longer term history is not great since they dove into Bitstream.

416878 2006-01-01 11:10:00 Matty3 if going the Orcon way means you can get broadband , then go for it .

I've been with Orcon for about 2 years and a while back they were cr*p, however things seem to have improved lately and I get a fairly constant 32K speed and their helpdesk seems ok

Extreme laziness alone has prevented me swapping to i-hug

Do consider how much data you may use tho, those Linux distros are quite large

However your Dad will love how with broadband you can be on-line AND use the phone
