416788 2006-01-01 02:32:00 you should be able to double click the nortons icon on the desktop or in the system tray and the options tab should be on the left hand menu

nortons is not 'better' than anything
when it runs properly it's ok, although this would be the exception rather than the norm.
it eats up system resources flat out, slowing your machine down and
it causes more problems than it fixes (as you appear to be finding out) and has brought many a pc to it's knees
the overwhelming consensus of opinion on this forum would be to dump it and install avg or avast for antivirus, along with zonealarm or kerio if you want a 3rd party firewall

Since you are rather new to Press F1 you won't yet know who the experts are here so I will tell you that bartsdadhomer is one of them.

Listen to and do what he says rather than argue with him and you will save yourself a lot of grief.

416791 2006-01-01 18:25:00 I am using Windows XP and Outlook and I have Norton AntiVirus 2004. When I am trying to send an e-mail through my Yahoo! account when Norton scans it it comes back with a message saying please re-send the message the connection with you mail program was lost or something like that. So really I can't send any e-mails properly. I have tried disabling Norton E-mail Scanning but I can't as my options menu is hiding somewhere which is what I need to go into to disable it according to Norton's online help service. Any Ideas????

~Matt
Are you sure you are useing "Outlook"? Or do you mean "Outlook Express"?
They are very different programs.
If you are useing outlook I would suggest you don't. I would even suggest you remove it from your computer.
I would even suggest you remove NAV and get another AV program. Nortons is now too top heavy and uses far too much of your comp.resources.
In any case do not switch off "E-mail scanning". It's an essential part of your protection.
Sounds to me as though you have a new computer with a lot of their so-called "free software" installed on it. Ever wondered why it is free? Ever wondered why you have been given a two year old version on NAV?

416792 2006-01-01 20:43:00 Hello Matt,

One of the reasons Nortons gets so much bad publicity now days, is it is no longer either easy to use straight out of the box or intuitive to configure if you require settings other than default.

The classic example of this is email scanning,

The settings for this appear simple, go to options untick both outgoing and incoming mail click OK and your finished.

The problem is doing the above has little or no effect on the mail scanning, NAV will still carry on scanning your mail as if it was working on it's default setting.

The reason for this is one of the other reasons NAV gets bad publicity, since 2004 there are ever increasing amounts of additional utilities included with NAV these utilities integrate into different part of your system and by default will take control of them regardless of what you tell NAV to do in options.

The only way to configure NAV the way you want is to go through each of the utilities and configure it independently as if it was a seperate utility.

In your case you need to do the following,

Click Norton Antivirus
In the Norton AntiVirus Options window under Internet, click Email
Under What to scan, uncheck Scan outgoing email (Recommended)
Click OK
On the Options menu click Norton AntiSpam
On the left side of the window, under Email, click Filtering
Uncheck Use outgoing email to improve Norton AntiSpam filtering (recommended)
Click OK
On the main Norton screen, disable Privacy Control.

If you are running Norton Internet security, there are a couple of other places to untick as well, also different versions have slightly different utilities bundled with them so not all of the above may apply.

Regards
AC

416793 2006-01-01 22:14:00 You still appear to be having problems - Reference to Norton site gives access to manual for Norton Anti Virus 2004 and clearly says : To turn off outgoing email scanning 1. In the main window click options - if a menu appears click Norton Anti Virus 2. In the options window under Internet click Email 3. Uncheck Scan outgoing mail 4 Click OK. In my Norton (not your version) the options button is at the top of the main window - if you can't find it perhaps get someone to show you where it is. As regards some mail getting through this does happen specially with small mail items - with larger items even though Outlook Express or Outlook shows as sent Norton check may not be complete before dial up disconnects and the mail is NOT SENT. I have just followed all this procedure for a friend who had a similar problem and all working OK now. Best of luck. tapram (9325)
