416625 2006-01-04 22:48:00 To add to this:

Go HERE (handlers.dshield.org) and download a file called wmffix_hexblog14.exe from HERE (handlers.sans.org) created by Ilfak Guilfanov.

This goes beyond the not very secure fix proposed elsewhere.

416629 2006-01-05 09:45:00 For those of you running Windows 98, there is a patch from NOD. Download from www.nod32.ch about 990kb.

The official Microsoft patch probably does not cover Windows 98, although someone could test this now (before the official release on the 10th), as a beta version has been leaked by someone from Microsoft.

416630 2006-01-06 01:32:00 In spite of the 10th being the "official" release date for Microsoft's patch, I've just been notified of ( & downloaded) what appears to be just that - but earlier than expected.
I got Ilfak Guilfanov's patch earlier, but won't be deleting it until I hear opinions on the effectiveness of Microsoft's version.

416631 2006-01-06 01:35:00 yes it appears MS patch is out earlier than exspected but no 9x ver (is 9x affected at all??)

edit: my 98se system appears to be immune. go 9x

416633 2006-01-06 01:35:00 I think ALL versions of Windows from 98 onwards are affected bob_doe_nz (92)
416634 2006-01-06 03:33:00 I got bored with getting MS updates years ago and only very occassionally have look at them but usually don't download.

I run AVG, ZAhome, CCleaner, Adaware, Spybot S & D and use firefox and I occassionally stray from the beaten track of the Intrawebbotnet to those dark back streets alluded to.

I keep a close eye (and ear) on what's going on, frequeuntly clear the cache, clean up after every session finally with CCleaner, and sometimes go into DOS (98se) and deltree the index.dats.

*touch head*

And touch wood don't have problems apart from the usual odd crash and freeze-up things that a good scrub clears away.

I have done programming years ago and ain't a moron but I'm no tech expert either like so many here I learn from daily, but hey.......

......it works for me.

yours etc.,
