417822 2006-01-03 21:21:00 I was really boastful, exagerating the problem, I think perhaps I would only like to understand what to do to receive a 'signal' from one of my computers about the time it connects to the internet. Something in general, simply theoritical i would like to grasp at the moment. AlexContour (7241)
417823 2006-01-03 21:35:00 I remember seeing a simple utility to set the PC's wallpaper to show it's IP address, OS, patches, versions, login and other information. It's purpose was to allow desktop support to quickly gather information about a PC from a end-user.

I even saw a hospital do this on shared PC's. However this is a serious security hole, as it great simplifies a hacker's "social engineering." A hacker doesn't even have to pretend to be a technician; he just needs to glance at the PC.

en.wikipedia.org(computer_security)

"In the field of computer security, social engineering is the practice of obtaining confidential information by manipulation of legitimate users. A social engineer will commonly use the telephone or Internet to trick people into revealing sensitive information or getting them to do something that is against typical policies. By this method, social engineers exploit the natural tendency of a person to trust his or her word, rather than exploiting computer security holes. It is generally agreed upon that "users are the weak link" in security and this principle is what makes social engineering possible."

Why? They wouldn't stay clients long...
