| 417525 | 2006-01-02 22:18:00 | now lets see after having a bit of fun with the other half on pressF1. I am looking at a slow 120MHz computer with windows 98, it was frustrating slow (because it only has about 32 meg of ram) I put in a old 400 Meg hard drive in it I had "under the bed" so to speak so to use it as win386.swap that has speeded it up a bit, but it is still anoying slow and sometimes it fezzes up. Part of the problem might be because it might look as if it has had just about every free program installed on it, and might need a new complete re-install Is there any other way to speed things up? Apart from adding more momery I think windows 98 needs at least 130 Meg of RAM in it. ...... And please for the sake of the busy moderators, no grammar crap this is a computer forum not a English one. |

| 417529 | 2006-01-02 23:00:00 | Its worth to spend an extra $5 on that computer . Either throw it away or else make do what you got now . That means load no extra software in the background . If not used for the net, then take out the anti virus and firewall, you can always use a bootdisk for anti virus or some software that does not always reside in the memory . IE may be a drag thou . . when it integrates with windows . Do you have windows 95a? That comes without IE . If not on the net, all it should have is windows and maybe office 97 or such . Office 2k has web integration and IE is compulsory to be installed . Since its so old don't bother installing directx stuff . No virus or firewall . Yeah try to reinstall it . |

I'm with drcspy here, I have a W98 box that has been run daily for 10-14 hours 7 days per week and hasn't had a reinstall since 1996 (or maybe 1997, who is going to argue over a year here or there). The last reinstall was to correct issues arising out of hardware failures, but since then it has been rock solid. It has a fair load of software, 256MB RAM and works just fine. Mind you, I don't load shonky software, and I'm not into warez, games, trials or any other form of risk-based computing either. Cheers Billy 8-{) |
