417645 2006-03-03 12:38:00 I would like to suggest this online backup (www.ibackup.com) service for QuickBooks.

It is a hands free application where it does automatic backup of your Quicken/ QuickBooks files on every update. Further the advantages of online backups add up as a secure disaster recovery measure against virus attacks, thefts, etc.,

417647 2006-03-03 22:31:00 Standard in all Small Business PC's I build/upgrade nowadays
2 x 80GB - Raid1 (not entirely necessary, but I like it)
1 x 80GB Backup drive
1 x DVD Writer (LG usually)
Genie Backup Manager
Staff do daily backups, I go in Once a week, perform a full weekly backup and test
Overkill? Ask someone that's lost everything.

This is about the simplest and most cost effective solution for a SOHO
Personally I'd use firewire or USB portables but found it too much mucking round and too easy for staff to damage, also the hassle for them of plugging in cables, packing up and taking offsite
The KISS theory works best

417648 2006-03-04 00:48:00 Since this is a "backup system at work", it might be worth while having a talk to the accountant. There might be some requirements to conform with audit rules. I have an idea that 1GB USB sticks, for example, would not be considered proper backups. Graham L (2)
417649 2006-03-12 00:39:00 nah, use an internal hard drive ie 200GB seagate with 5 year warrenty and an external hard drive case for about $200

Hi Prescott
Is this a mix and match ? why is it that an internal seagate is cheaper than an external seagate if that is what you are saying ?

417650 2006-03-20 09:26:00 External hard drive eg Maxtor one touch - a 100GB version costs about $260

7,200 rpm , 8 meg cache , usb 2

Is 8Mg of cache necessarily better in this instance than the alternative of 2Mg ? May seem a very basic question, but believe me, I do not know the answer, Katimike.

417651 2006-03-20 11:17:00 If you are looking for a hardware backup solution, may I suggest RAID0+1 (if your mobo will handle it, as you will need 4 drives the same size).

I am assuming your backups are incremental?

I would also suggest software such as Acronis True Image 9 which will do incremental backups, even to another server (ftp)

If you get an external drive then Tazz suggestion has very good merit in my opinion.
The October 2005 PC World Pages 82-86 compares different external drives for both single PC's and network drives. Amongst other things the writer says "Many of the drives we tested shipped with a limited or older version of backup software". He then goes on to compare backup software. Acronis True Image 9 is not mentioned as it is imaging software - however it has been reviewed along with Norton Ghost in a different edition of PC World. Acronis compares very favourably (though slightly harder apparently for a beginner). The cost is very significantly cheaper too.
Misty :)

PS - I am 95% sure that I will be going with Acronis for my own needs.

417653 2006-03-23 21:40:00 We have sorted a backup system out, an external DVD RW, using Nero back-it-up, just got to sort out to get Nero going The_End_Of_Reality (334)
