1357654 2006-01-04 23:20:00 The CPU in my computer is a P4 2.53 FSB533 478 pin as a cheap upgrade I have thought about putting in a 3.0ghz P4 FSB533 479 pin CPU. I have looked on Trademe for one, but the only ones I find are the newer 800mhz FSB one's selling at new prices. Dose anyone know were I can buy one of these older CPUs from.

1357655 2006-01-04 23:30:00 What's your budget? If you're after a bargain then of course try the risk of buying used. But for new prices guide, look at www.pricespy.co.nz and the fourth or fifth lowest prices are a fair indication.

PS - I was recently looking for a 478 P4 3ghz and found a decent deal at C1 Shopping mall in East Auckland. Around $250.00 full retail it was (includes HSF kit). Didn't actually buy it cos they were out of stock on the day and since been advised that my old 2.4 may be able to be resurrected.

1357657 2006-01-04 23:53:00 What kind of motherboard do you have? There may be a BIOS upgrade that will allow you to use the 800MHz FSB CPU's?

cheers

1357658 2006-01-05 00:07:00 Ascent still sells new ones. You're not going to get an earth-shattering difference in performance, even to 3.2GHz.

More RAM, a better video card will probably give a better bang for the buck. There's plenty of good AGP video cards still available.

You might want to see if your motherboard supports DDR RAM.

1357659 2006-01-05 00:38:00 Can't say I've seen any BIOS update, that lets you use a 800fsb CPU in a 533 system. (if it doesnt support 800 as well).

You would have to get a whole new mobo.

1357660 2006-01-05 01:00:00 Motherboard is a Asus P4B533 with 1gb of 2100 DDR ram, fastest MB supports. Also have a Geforce FX 6800 LE TDH 128mb graphics card.

1357661 2006-01-05 01:52:00 Sounds like the a RAM upgrade from 1GB to 2GB probably won't have a great affect, and your video card is pretty reasonable.

However a CPU upgrade from 2.53Ghz to even 3.2GHz not going to do much either, as I can personally attest.

Perhaps you should hang tight until you can afford a new PC.

1357662 2006-01-05 02:54:00 Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed and also have a look here (www.asus.com.tw) to see which CPU's your motherboard can support. I couldn't get the page as Asus was synchronizing their database, you may want to try later though.

What are you other system specs? As stated previously there may be a cheaper options than buying a new CPU to increase the performance of your system.

Cheers

1357663 2006-01-05 04:02:00 overclock it for a little while, (with care) and see if it really seems any 'better' ?

I run a P4 2.4Ghz (800fsb) which I've been known to o/c to 3.0ghz on rare occasions for fun.....honestly it dont make a lot of difference..actually i'ts runnin at 2.7ghz right now and you'd hardly know it.....
