418217 2006-01-04 09:45:00 Hi people.

I have a 2-3 year old Dell Dimension (the basic one with no AGP slots). It has integrated graphics, which actually have gotten me through fine so far, I even do alot of online gaming.

But are there any PCI graphics cards (if these are even still sold) which would improve things? Or should I stay with the existing ones?

By the way it is a 2.3gz proc with 504mb of RAM. I do not know many other specs, they will not be good however!!!

418218 2006-01-04 09:47:00 PCI cards will be better than builtin graphics.
Get a ATI or Nividia Geforce 5000 series. Even the 4000 series will be good vs the builtin ones.

Trademe has it prob for $70-150 ish ...

418220 2006-01-04 09:59:00 2.3ghz is not bad. Seriously. I am using a P3 now a laptop left from last time but I don't play games. A friend got a 2.4ghz 512MB system like 2yr ago abouts. He has buitlin graphics as he don't play games.

A PCI graphics will be a dedicated card rather than a buitin graphics. I think many games allow older cards than the Geforce 6000 and 7000 series (the current ones). May not be the max quality but least you can have med or med high settings. With a reduce resolution perhaps... still its v workable.

418221 2006-01-04 10:00:00 They will be an improvment, its a tough call to say it will be a value improvement though.

Range is limited, and more expensive then comparable AGP cards.

Gainward Geforce4 MX-420 PCI 64MB VGA, Low Profile Design PowerColour ATI Radeon 9250, CRT + DVI-I + TV Out, 128MB
STLab Geforce MX400 32MB PCI VGA Card

Pretty poor pickings.

Personally I would say sell the old girl and invest it a new rig, Which may or maynot be realistic advice.....

418222 2006-01-04 10:07:00 Oh yeah . I just remem . . can you fit full height PCI cards or just half height?

If the latter then you can't get the full speed 4000 5000 Nvidia cards and as Metla said . . you'll find it going a bit more hard going ahead .

If half height see here . A guy posted a similar Q re: half height Dell computers .

418223 2006-01-04 10:09:00 It could be a tough call.

I use my PC to watch TV, play games & watch movies.

I just realised I only have 3 PCI slots & their all used lol.

But it seems to not cope well with multitasking, eg surfing the net whilst recording TV.

I could also do with better grapihcs for gaming.

Though none of these is THAT important.

I guess the cost of the cards plus the cost of replacing the modem with an external one just wouldnt be worth it.

418224 2006-01-04 10:09:00 Integrated graphics card will use a certain amount of your memory in order to get working. Having said that, I observe that you have a total of more than half of gig of RAM, so this might not be really a big issue for you after all. I'm pretty sure PCI graphics card are still available in the market, though their performance is not as glamorous as AGP ones. Have you thought of upgrading your motherboard? (just a suggestion, btw)

Cheers :)

418225 2006-01-04 10:10:00 Well the PC box is ALOT thicker than the thin ones at my UNI. Although it is tonnes smaller than those customizable neon lighted flash computers with water cooling & warp drive.

I think its full size.

418226 2006-01-04 10:13:00 Just about any computer will struggle while recording TV, the process puts a huge strain on the computer, and if you up the settings you can bring a top of the line rig to its knees.

Granted recording at a setting higher then the broadcast standard is a waste of time, but asking it to do intensive encoding of the fly will also kneecap it.

However, Recent low-end TV cards now have an onboard encoder, so watch out for them babies if your going to spend some money....
