2006-01-04 00:27:00 | I was visualizing a new PC. One of the pieces I was thinking about a Geforce 7800GTX Extreme. Not a cheap item at around $850 - $1,400! Anyhow I bounced the idea off a friend, and he said Nvidia considers it "end of life," and are now looking toward dual processors on a single board. He also mentioned dual PCIe video cards are not supported by all games. Any opinions?

2006-01-04 00:36:00 | ok, go back to your friend who told you that the 7800gtx is end of life and smack him around the head repeatedly. The 7800gtx is the newest high end graphics card from nvidia and barely 2-3 months old..., it may be true that in the future companies will look towards dual gpu's on a single card as the main standard however this will by no means instantly make single gpu cards obsolete overnight. | lagbort (5041) | |
2006-01-04 01:13:00 | Geforce 7800GTX Extreme a friend, said Nvidia considers it "end of life," End of life means they aren't making anymore of that model and once stocks are gone from suppliers there will be no more. Considering Nvidia have just released this card they would hardly be deciding not to continue for a few months yet. End of life is the 5xxx series. Your friend probably has a big case of jealousy - he can't afford one so wants to sabotage your purchase. Go out and buy it and invite him round so he can WATCH you play with it.

2006-01-04 05:13:00 | Its highly unlikely that nVidia or ATI will release a GPU that specifically allows for more than one core on the PCB. Some manufactuers have been able to tweak SLI to allow more than one core on the PCB, but these have only been avalialbe in small numbers (e.g 100's) and would be very difficult to souce here in NZ. Many years ago ATI release a card with dual Rage 128 chips on the PCB, it bombed and i doubt they would risk it again. Especially with crossfire offering the same performance and features without the risk. To consider the 7800 series of chips as "end of life" is absurd. As said earlier they were only released a couple of months ago, although it is expected that both nVidia and ATI will release new cores sometime within the next couple of months.

October 5th 2005 - January 24th, 2006."" (mind due seeing is believing) www.theinquirer.net Oh and to see more pictures of 2GPU's on 1 PCB that does not exist :P, in Quad SLI configuration. Not a fan of Asus, but these puppies do look nice. www.tomshardware.com |

2006-01-05 05:30:00 | pctek i think you'll find that neither ATI or nVidia's current GPU's have been specifically designed to allow for more than one core per PCB . They have however been designed to allow for multi-card configurations, known as SLI and Crossfire . What ASUS (2x7800's) and Gigabyte (2x6800's) both did when they released cards with two cores on the one PCB was tweak the SLI interface to allow more than one core per PCB . The second core on the PCB doesnt communicate directly with the PCIe bus, it communicates through the first core . Pete, where the frig have you been? Several factors have kept me away Metla, the first being a serious lack of an internet connection at university . Did the socially expected thing and spent my first year at University in the halls of residence, where it wasnt exactly affordable to get an internet connection in my room . Secondly just before i went to uni the forums changed over to the new software, which in my opinion is a pain in the a$$ . I just couldnt be bothered navigating the new forum on the seriously sub-par university computers . I may just have to start the Bring Back Retro PressF1 club, the old software was just sooo much easier for a quick browse .
