417850 2006-01-03 23:08:00 I'm having trouble with a ASUS DRW-1608P DVD writer.

It writes DVDs perfectly & but won't play commercial DVDs.

If I use Nero to convert an avi file to DVD, it plays perfectly in a standalone DVD player & on the DVD drive on the PC.

But if I try to play a commercial DVD, the system just freezes.

I've tried numerous DVD playing apps, including the ULead app that the drive came with.

I'm guessing some sort of copy protection is at work, but how do I get around it?
I don't want to copy the disc; just play it.

Any clues appreciated.

Beside Ulead? What's the numerous others?

Are you trying to watch it on a TV thru video out, on a videocard?

Run Nero Infotool . What version of the firmware is on the burner??

417852 2006-01-03 23:23:00 What operating system? Have you tried updating its drivers? Greg (193)
417853 2006-01-03 23:30:00 Running XP.

I've tried WinDVD, Nero Showtime, Magic DVD Player & a couple of others.

Haven't checked the drivers since I installed the drive a month ago, grabbing the drivers from Windows Update.

I'm not trying to watch it through TV, just putting the disc in the DVD drive on the PC & playing through that.

I'll have to check the firmware version when I get back to the PC.

417854 2006-01-03 23:42:00 Go give the program here (www.remoteselector.com) a go as an administrative user. It should tell tell you whether its region lock is permanent and what it is set to.

Also try VLC media player (www.videolan.org) to play your DVD's and see what happens

417855 2006-01-03 23:43:00 try using VLC www.videolan.org Mirddes (10)
417856 2006-01-03 23:52:00 Thanks for that.

I'll try VLC.

I know that the region lock isn't the problem, because I haven't changed that & there are still 4 region changes available.

417857 2006-01-03 23:53:00 Use PowerDVD - the ASUS drives come with it - although they rename it to ASUS DVD. pctek (84)

Note that some disks just simply don't like some drives. I am getting the Stargate SG1 DVD's and many of them don't read properly on my laptop or one of my PC drives but play perfectly on a proper DVD player and 4 other DVD drives in PC's.
