417860 2006-01-04 07:05:00 Running XP .

Haven't checked the drivers since I installed the drive a month ago, grabbing the drivers from Windows Update .

Others may disagree however I would not trust any hardware drivers from Windows Update

The latest firmware is available from Asus [1 . 57]

417861 2006-01-04 07:08:00 And you dont usually get firmware updates from Windowsupdate.

1.57 is firmware, not a driver update. They're totally different things.

And you dont usually need drivers for burners, so they work in XP.

The only thing with this burner is, the update on the ASUS download site isnt for the OEM burner thats around, so I found out in the ASUS forum.

So, if u have the OEM version of the 1608P, dont use that update. Also, make sure the burner is by itself on the ide connection. Some people have had probs updating the firmware for it, if its connected with another cd / dvd device on the same IDE connection.

417862 2006-01-04 07:12:00 OK.

Ran the firmware upgrade.
That went OK. Thanks for that.

Installed VLC - same result as any other player; sits there & looks at me.

Checked the regions. No changes there.

Anything else?

417863 2006-01-04 07:13:00 Agreed Speedy - so what was the driver update our friend Peterj downloaded ?

I'd have thought best approach would be to update the firmware , then install the bundled applications - in that order ?

Well works for me . . .

417864 2006-01-04 07:19:00 Firmware is now 1.57

Disregard the driver issue.

Maybe I should reinstall the bundled Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 Suite SE now that the firmware's been updated.

417865 2006-01-04 07:20:00 Peterj - if you are sure the hardware is working fine it surely must be a software issue [?]

I'd delete ALL the software decoders , run something like CCleaner incl the registry scan , reboot and then load on the software ...

BTW what software came with your [ lovely] drive - looking at the Asus site and reviews it appears the bundled software depends on your region , geographically ...

I'd have thought a quality piece of kit such as your burner would work fine if installed correctly and the packaged software was up to the job

417866 2006-01-04 07:28:00 Hmm I was going to say check the IDE cable, but since it burns OK .

Somehow, I dont think the cable is the prob .

What kind of IDE cable is it Peter?

40 wire or 80 wire (a blue connector on the mobo end) .

If it isnt using a blue connector, I would change it for an 80 wire ide ribbon cable . The DMA may double (if its on DMA 2 now, it may go up to DMA 4) .

And what else is on the same connector as this burner? Anything? Or is it by itself?

I would also check Nero Infotool (if this is installed), or device manager under IDE/ATA Atapi adapters . Look under the primary or secondary ide channel .

See if everything is on DMA NOT PIO .

417867 2006-01-04 07:36:00 It's just a standard 40-pin cable.

The drive works fine.
Burned a dozen discs backing up precious games & documents for the day that the primary drive commits suicide.

Primary & secondary channels set to DMA.
It's on the same cable as a Lite-On CD writer, which also works fine.

The only issue is the commercial CDs - currently testing with Robots & Back to the Future.
2 teenagers, one DVD player & TV....
