2006-01-05 08:50:00 | I'm herlping a friend with their notebook . The model is a Asus A6V Processor: Intel® Pentium® M processor 740 (1 . 73GHz, 2MB On-Die L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB) Memory: 512MB DDR2 533MHz SDRAM Hard Drive: 80GB 4200rpm We think there may be some kind of software or setting that is throttling the cpu . My friend is using it for audio production and is not getting the same cpu output as his friends who have the exact same model/setup . From since he brought it, there has been no other software installed except his audio program (ie . firewire or virus) as the notebook is not used online and is used solely for audio . I have read that Centrino notebook/CPU's throttle the cpu to sustain the battery . Is there any way to determine if something is throttling the cpu? Or any way to determine if there is any hidden programs draining processor power? Anyone have any ideas . Thanks as always . M .

2006-01-06 00:05:00 | Most laptops control the CPU speed to conserve battery life. Your friend might be being caught by one set up to be very conservative of power. You should be able to set it to be more useful. Have a look in the Windows Control panel for something like "Power Management". I'm not sure how you get into that in XP ... but someone will delight in instructing us. :D If the laptop is never or seldom used on battery, you could set it to a "no power saving" mode.

Thanks for the suggestion Graham. We actually disabled all the power management settings we could find and/or set them to no restrictions. This morning I also disabled everything in the startup list using msconfig to see if there was a program loading that may be taking cpu power, but unfortunately it made no difference. There is a program called 'ASUS Power4 Gear+' which is a power management program. But even with this disabled there is no improvement. Is there any way to test the cpu to see what it is running at? Thanks. M. |

2006-01-06 05:26:00 | Its probably a good idea to re-enable power management settings. What do you mean by "CPU output"? Put the CPU underload and then check the physical clockspeed. Also have a look in the BIOS to make sure all the settings are correct. Under full load the Pentium M should scale up to 1.73GHz. I would highly doubt its CPU throttling thats limiting your performance. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | |
2006-01-06 05:35:00 | Go to Intel.com and see if a download is available. Such as my P3 Intel laptop its got Intel SpeedStep or such..... What is different? If they the same laptop then the same software should be on it right?? At a guess, the same HD controller device drivers installed on both? Same HD? Same mobo and CPU?? Same RAM? If the laptops are not diff .. the mobo may be different and how the parts are put together, laptops do come all assembled from one manufacturer..... Could be a case despite similar parts, one computer can out do the other....

2006-01-07 03:38:00 | There may not be a software or there may be one. All I can say is go to intel and see wha downloads they provide your for CPU. This is Speedstep for P3, there may be something for P4 as well..... support.intel.com
