418428 2006-01-05 08:22:00 I have just done a clean install of XP with SP2. As part of that process I got the latest Nvidia Drivers, and installed them. Everything seems to be fine, but whenever I click on the nvidia property tool in the system tray, or go into the advanced panel of the display setup, or basically open any panel related to nVidida, my screen resets itself (in the same manner as changing the resolution or refresh rates does).

This is incredibly annoying, so does anyone know either why it is happening, or what I can do to stop it? As I recall my last set of drivers did it too, but not all the time.

Cheers,
Craig.

418429 2006-01-05 08:29:00 What videocard is in the system??

Some videocards dont work with some versions of the Nvidia drivers .

Or arent compatible . Go to system properties / advanced / startup and recovery . Untick restart automatically .

Then if it crashes again, see if it comes up with an error / name of a driver .

418430 2006-01-05 09:25:00 Got same setup and recently updated Nvidea, it initially set the screen to the lowest resolution and frequency that the monitor used, giving a screen about half the depth available. Went to Everest Home Edition | Display | Monitor | Supported Video Modes and reset in my case to 1024 X 768 85Hz. In the Users Guide there is a caution about not setting to higher values than the hardware can use or damage may ensue. FrankS (257)
418431 2006-01-05 11:43:00 I had that exact problem after installing the coolbits 2 reg tweak on a computer running older 77.72 drivers.

It works fine on my new 81.98 drivers (but also a different card.)

have you tried just re-installing the drivers??

418432 2006-01-06 19:44:00 Its a GeforceFX 5600. The PC itself isn't resetting, just the monitor. You know when you change the resolution or refresh rate, the screen blacks out, then refreshes with the new settings - well that's what is happening when i load any of the nVidia property pages, either under the display control panel, or even opening them directly from the nVidia shortcuts in start menu or system tray.

I have the latest 81.98 drivers, and have reinstalled them as suggested above, but the same problem exists.

418433 2006-01-06 20:21:00 craig.b have you tried uninstalling the graphics driver via add/ remove prog's and rebooting then installing one of the older drivers eg 77.72 ? KatiMike (242)
418434 2006-01-06 22:09:00 When you right click Desktop, cl Nvidea display, does it show the correct name of your monitor? cl this to see Nvidea settings window, does this have a tick against "Hide modes that this monitor cannot support". Is the mode you have set available? FrankS (257)
418435 2006-01-06 23:25:00 Do you have any tweaks installed?

download the right .inf file for your monitor... if it's not detected properly and it might solve your problem.

418436 2006-01-11 00:59:00 Yep done that, Installed the correct inf file for the monitor. Made no difference at all.
Also, re-installed the same nVidia driver. Also no effect. Don't want to go back to previous version of driver, as that is the MS installed one that comes with XP (it's nearly two years old now).

418437 2006-06-25 12:11:00 Disable the Nividia Display Manager tool in the Advance settings for the Video card. I had the same problem and disabled this function and the problem went away  abtrooper (9547)
