418267 2006-01-04 21:55:00 Hi

On my PC I had a measily 256mb (400mhz) of DDRII memory, have just installed a further 512mb (400mhz) DDRII .

The computer I have is a Dell and has 4 expansion slots for extra memory, I put the new memory in the slot next to the old memory so the first slot has 256mb and the second has 512mb . Have checked the BIOS and both memory has been recognised .

I was just wondering though is this the best way to install the memory or is there another way to better utilise the memory I have? :waughh:

Any advice would be great, cheers guys .

The slots are sometimes coloured (ie: purple, blue), so you put the right simms in the right slots.

Thats great, this probably is a stupid question but do you have to have two identical sticks together (i.e two 512mb) or does it mean in my case by having 256mb and 512mb that I am not going to get the best out of the memory, or does it just mean I have 256mb less. :waughh:

418270 2006-01-05 23:47:00 You have to have 2 identical simms.

512mb and 512mb. NOT 512 and 256mb.

They have to be the same brand and the same speed.

What you have now (512 and 256mb), wont work with dual channel, even if you put them in the right ram slots.

512 mb and 256mb will be fine together, but since the system MAY support dual channel, sometimes its a good idea to make use of it. It can speed things up.
