418995 2006-01-07 21:34:00 I have a friend (it's not me - honest!) who's just bought a new Dell computer. She thought it had an integrated modem, but when she discovered that it didn't, she bought an external modem from Dick Smith (DSE brand USB 56K modem). Here's part of an email she just sent:

"I have another problem which I haven’t solved yet which is that when I disconnect from the dial-up connection my computer freezes up, and I often have to turn it off at the wall. I’ve tried system restore and reinstalling but I think there is some clash/conflict between the modem and the computer settings. On my old Mac I used to have an excellent programme called ‘Conflict Catcher’ which made the computer and its software resolve their differences… are you aware of anything like that that I can try?"

I don't know what to advise her - any suggestions?

No need for Firewalls, Anti-virus or Spyware programs.
The time and effort involved in keeping all these programs (that are necessary for Windows to remain relatively secure) updated and working is quite time consuming and why people put themselves through that when there are other operating systems around that require none of this effort I find very strange.

418997 2006-01-07 22:10:00 get rid of the usb modem and either use an internal or a serial external (preferred). tweak'e (69)
418998 2006-01-07 22:16:00 it's very unusual that the pc didn't come with a modem - she ought to get someone more knowledgeable to check it out - there may be a modem in there & thats where the conflict is coming from. quarry (252)

As they say on the Tui ad "Yer Right". Every PC known to man past, present and future will always be vunerable to these nasties regardless of make and software.

419002 2006-01-08 00:52:00 They ALL have modems.
I had a customer ring me the other day to "put a modem in". When questioned further - yes, it had the hole for the cable....
Driver problem....
