418988 2006-01-07 20:25:00 I have got a 160Gb HDD already formatted to 20Gb for windows and programs, and the rest for storage, now what I want to do is make the windows partition to about 60Gb,and the rest storage, how can I do this without reformating it if there is a way?

(there is no data on the windows partition, but there is about 28Gb used on the storage)

Thanks :)

418989 2006-01-07 20:46:00 As usual, this is a dangerous operation so back up beforehand.

Though they're may be free solutions, PowerQuest make partition magic just for this very thing. Now owned by Symantec.

418990 2006-01-07 20:49:00 Actually, just looking at some HDDs I have enough space to move the storage data, then would I reformat and re partition it?, if so is there a program in Win XP Pro that can do this? The_End_Of_Reality (334)
418991 2006-01-07 21:27:00 I recently did just what you are trying to do.
Under disk management in windows. I deleted the empty storage partition,then...

... using a Live CD of Knoppix 4.0.2 to boot from, then using "qparted" resized the partition with windows on it (C:) from 10Gb to 20Gb.

After that just booted back to windows again and used disk manger to format remaining space for storage.

Worked good for me, but backing up is a good idea, just incase of "opps".

418992 2006-01-07 21:46:00 I have also done what Nyuuji did, except that it was only for an experiment a week before I was planning a complete reformat, etc anyway.

It seemed to work and I would advise that you do a defrag before trying it, preferably disabling the Page File first then re-enabling it after the defrag. Defrag does the job a lot better when this is done.

418994 2006-01-10 18:42:00 I moved all data of the drive and reformatted it and partitioned it using disk manager in windows and it done its job :) The_End_Of_Reality (334)
