i tried to do this thing i read in a forum which was to delete every registry entry with the name 'directx' in it. then to reinstall direct x with compatibility mode set to 98/me) to fix nv4_disp.dll making pc crash in direct3d games.

DIDNT WORK

i ended up screwing it completely and you can't uninstall directx so i got a program that did by installing dx8 with dos in safemode from winxp CD, then i installed newly downloaded direct x 9.0c and i go 2 dxdiag.exe and it says im using 8.1 and directplay registry is missing. everything works fine except counter-strike source saying i need 2 update....

i tried registry backups from last year and it still not fixed. does this mean another reformat?

418792 2006-01-06 09:58:00 You could try reinstalling Windows over the top of your current version. This would revert back to defaults. Which means reinstalling DX again bob_doe_nz (92)
418793 2006-01-06 10:02:00 hmm yes that's an idea. but would it damage the sp2? jamesyboi (6579)
418794 2006-01-06 10:35:00 If you reinstall over the top of windows it will revert to the same as your original windows version. If its SP1 then thats what you get. It will leave the settings and programs you have installed since your original installation but not your Windows updates. It may get rid of DirectX but I wouldnt count on it.
