418608 2006-01-05 23:06:00 Seagate 250 GB problem

I have recently bought a Seagate hard drive from Supercheappc . I have partitioned it to 4 (65G, 65G, 95G, remain about 10G respectively) partitions and used the first two . However, when I tried to transfer some files to the third partition the computer said the is a disk error run chkdsk . I restarted my computer and then the Seagete hard drive only showed two partitions and all the partitions are unformated, thus all the data were lost .

I am running windows 2000 with service pack 4 .

Please advise the possible cause and how to correct this .

Thanks .

418609 2006-01-05 23:11:00 Take it back and get it replaced, or get a refund, and go to another shop. Speedy Gonzales (78)

So is this a hard drive problem? Can I have some advice on what caused this? Yes, it is likely to be a hard drive problem and the cause could be anything from a faulty batch to physical mistreatment of it .

418613 2006-01-05 23:56:00 You could try getting a live Linux CD and see if Linux can read any data off it. tony_young480 (4942)
418614 2006-01-05 23:56:00 It is a brand new crive and only a few weeks old? I have never tried Linux. Where to get the Linux CD? Thanks. lightfoot (39)

418616 2006-01-05 23:59:00 firstly run chkdsk and see what it reports. 2nd run seagate seatools and it will tell if any problems with drive.

this sort of thing can happen if there was a fault in the partitioning, driver problems, heat problems, virus's and i've even had some hardrive tools cause this.

test the drive before replaceing it as there may be nothing wrong with it.

Not really . . . . . I like maxtor, never had problems with them . . . yet :horrified

Maybe there is a problem with the drive being too big and causing problems with the controller/driver???

I did a defrag (on my old seagate drive) and when it was finished everything seemed fine - until I rebooted, when windows reported the drive completely empty .

I ran File Scavenger and manager to rescue most of my stuff . Probably better to try something like that before you get chkdsk to play around with it . . .
