419042 2006-01-10 08:40:00 I have heard rumors that the Athlons can get very hot and sometimes burn out! Is this true or false?

To Clarify

Athlon 64's, dual core and Fx's ALL have thermal cut off that will protect the CPU if the heat sink is not install or fan dies etc (just like Intel).

Athlon 64, dual core and Fx's run cooler than all the equivalent Intels (appart from the fact Intel are struggling to keep pace performance wise).

For gaming go AMD 64 3500+or above, Cheaper, faster, cooler, use less power, have I missed anything?

64 Bit?? not all P4's have 64 bit support...

But processor temperature is monitored by AMD logic which takes its temperature reading from the AMD CPU processor thermal diode. The power supply can then be shut down very quickly in case the CPU overheats for some reason, like heatsink fan failure. But this is dependant on the motherboard you are using.

I think you are getting a tad confused with older Athlon, the new 90nm AM64's have thermal throttling witch reduces the speed(clock cycles) of the CPU like the P4's do.( a copy of Intel's THERMAL MONITORING 2 (TM2)"

You can still manually control the AMD64's with the board exactly as you described, however if the MB protection is disabled and as the CPU nears its maximum threshold, the CPU will throttle in exactly the same way as Intel.
