| 418747 | 2006-01-07 13:39:00 | Hey FoxyMX, So the incompatible browser journey begins again. I'm assuming you're trying for some type of XHTML Strict, otherwise the Transitional method (which I think should be avoided) should work. I'm not sure whether you're using align: center; in your external CSS file, which is incorrect. This may hold a possible solution, but I have not tested it with IE nor am I lowering my standards to do such a thing. You can use either text-align: center; or margin: 0 auto; or even both. hr { width: 45%; text-align: center; margin: 0 auto; } If it doesn't work with IE, then another possible solution would be to use another element to act like an hr tag, since it's a Text Presentational element, it can definitely be created using a Text element, if you use Firefox, search for html.css which might show you firefox's default CSS styling for how the hr element is created, you can then use another element to represent it's similarities. Cheers, KK |

| 418749 | 2006-01-07 21:26:00 | Hi Kame, nice to see you around again . :) Your code has done the trick and works brilliantly - thanks! It's really weird but the "text-align: center;" didn't work for me when I first tried it but the code has changed a bit since then which may have something to do with it now working . And I will confess to having tried the "align: center;", which didn't work, as you say . Having the "margin: 0 auto;" in or out of the CSS sheet makes no difference but I will leave it in anyway . Rob, your coding doesn't work in my actual page for some reason, though on my test page it works . It must be due to some other coding on the page which has a left alignment . Only IE has the problem though, not other browsers . I'm not using XHTML Strict as I get too many errors, not being totally familiar with that coding yet . Using HTML 4 . 01 Transitional//EN I get a 100% pass so I will stick with that for now as this is only a hobby page and I still have much to learn . I find it really ironic that in the past my pages would look perfect when viewing them in IE then when I was introducted to the "alternative browsers" Opera, Firebird/Firefox, etc I was horrified to discover how ghastly they looked in those . Now it is the other way around - I use Opera and Firefox to check how it all looks then discover the mess Internet Explorer makes of them . How things have changed . MS/IE really does need to get its act sorted out rather than us having to keep finding ways to work around its inadequancies . Anyway, thanks for all the help and suggestions, people . I'll be back! :D |
