418686 2006-01-06 08:46:00 Tazz:
This program (dhc014.rpc1.org) can disable the RPC encoding in all Liteon DVD drives apparently. It works on my Sony DRU-800A.

/me waits for the ban to kick in.

418687 2006-01-06 09:02:00 Region locks need to be wiped out, Its got nothing to do with piracy and everything to do with the big fish trying to force price structures on different markets.

I get around it by ripping the damn dvd AND BURNING MY OWN COPY.

Go to hell Sony.

Anyhow, mindless violence and destruction aside, I just flashed my 1673s drive with the firmware from a 1693s drive, now it thinks its a 1693, yet still can't read DVD-Ram.....

418688 2006-01-06 09:03:00 Erm, why are you blaming Sony for your Liteon drive...

Edit: Ohhh right the whole encoding issue

418689 2006-01-06 09:06:00 I've just found that Samsung make DVD-RAM read/write capable drives so that sounds quite attractive. I've had a Samsung CD writer for a couple of years now and it seems to be very reliable, so is there any adverse information out there in PF1 land about Samsung DVD writers that I really need to know?

Cheers

418690 2006-01-06 09:08:00 Yep, it's a half-arsed effort at best. I just got new a DVD recorder for the big TV and there in the top of the box was a pink slip with the code to make the player region-free.

Idiocy that the manufacturers have to 'cow-tow' to the film merchants like that and only pisses off Joe public that they have to unlock the recoder themselves.

418691 2006-01-06 09:10:00 Can't tell you about Samsung DVD's Billy, but I have a Samsung TV and Samsung LCD screen, both excellent quality/design. (I wish I'd bought a Samsung DVD for the TV now!) Shortcircuit (1666)
418692 2006-01-06 20:12:00 I have installed a number of LG DVD writers and haven't had a lemon yet

Billy , they are fine with DVD Ram also and there was a very positive review in a PC World a while back , as well as web reviews

I agree with Metla wrt the regional coding issue , the LG drive I have at home is well up to the job of allowing me to make region free backups of my legally purchased DVDs for research purposes , and also means I don't have to worry about the kids fingerprints / scratches making my legally purchased discs unreadable

Ascent has them for around $100 or so with the highly useable Nero express which works well with other widely available free software

Myth (110)
418694 2006-01-06 21:49:00 I just bought one a couple of days ago from Ascent. I decided it was time to update my old DVD writer.

I can't believe I paid $220 for my LDW-851S only a year & a half ago.

How does the region free hack work? Will it void the warranty?

418695 2006-01-06 21:51:00 That region free program was apparently made BY liteon, and at the above site they have a working javascript demo of it which you can try out to see how it works. I'm not sure about the warranty voiding though. bob_doe_nz (92)
