| 418677 | 2006-01-06 07:32:00 | This model is very decent. The Sony DRU-800A is a rebadged version of this. And you can turn off and reset the DVD regional encoding with certain Liteon software. Getting it is another matter entirely. |

| 418679 | 2006-01-06 08:09:00 | When using DVD drives, make sure your computer can handle it, or else dvd movies will lag - and make sure you set the drive up to use DMA mode or else you will get lag and possibly other problems (when my DVD drive was set to PIO I got graphical corruption when playing DVD's) DVD region-free or a similar program is good for bypassing the region limtations. |

Everything else being equal, my main requirement is whether or not the player can play DVD-Ram because I have some programming on that media via my DVD-TV recorder. I notice that both the Liteon and the Asus list DVD-RAM in the schedule of "compatible media" but don't actually come right out and say that they can playback from this media. The Asus example is Here (au.asus.com) and there is a similar listing for the Liteon, however the Sony clone doesn't mention DVD-RAM. It is all very confusing! Can anybody clarify? So, can the 1608P . Which is on this PC . But both don't support writing to DVD-RAM . |

| 418684 | 2006-01-06 08:40:00 | Not too sure if the firmware updates make both compatible with reading DVD-RAM. Or whether they read DVD-RAM, with the original firmware. As both of these have the latest version of the firmware on them. Both also support DL. The 1608P supporting both + and - DL. The 1604P -. This (au.asus.com) shows the 1608P can read DVD-RAM. |

| 418685 | 2006-01-06 08:43:00 | Unlike some other DVD recorders you can change the Liteon to play all regions. Search for “LtnRPC.exe” on the web. I haven't used mine to play pre recorded DVDs, so can't tell you how this works. I've just checked the box and there's no mention that the Liteon deals with DVD-Ram. It does do DVD-Rom though. The NZ version comes with Nero 6 for burning... great for free. Also comes with PowerDVD, but I don't know that I'd bother installing it. My understanding is that (unlike some other DVD player/recorders) the Liteon is good at playing/recording most brands of disc. |
