| 418553 | 2006-01-05 22:54:00 | Hi All I am looking at purchasing a couple of large SATA drives to replace my ageing and small-capacity IDE drives and then doing a fresh reinstall of Windows XP Pro on the 1st SATA drive. My motherboard (Gigabyte 8IK1100) supports SATA and has 2 SATA connectors SATA 0 & SATA 1. From the preliminary research that Ive done on the topic it would appear that I may have some problems in getting XP installed on the primary SATA drive. By the looks of it I need to enable my SATA connections (through the BIOS) as SATA 0 & SATA 1 and not have them set as either disabled or remapped as IDE primary and/or slave and hit F6 when Im doing my XP install and install 3rd party drivers via a floppy disc. The difficulty that I have with this is I havent had a floppy drive in this PC for ages and Im not inclined to have to install one just to get SATA drivers installed for the SATA drives to be recognized! From my reading I understand that if I have an XP Pro install disc that has SP2 included I dont need the floppy driver workaround is this correct and are my abovementioned assumptions correct or is there another way of achieving a hassle-free SATA-based install of XP? |

SP2 doesn't fix this . The RAID drivers usually have to be installed during the XP install, NOT after XP has been installed . If you're not going to use RAID, then you don't need the drivers for RAID . Just as long as the BIOS detects both, XP will see both once XP has been installed . (if you're not going to use RAID) . They'll run like normal hard drives . Just make sure both have power connectors . The header/s on the mobo only supplies data, it doesn't supply the power . With some (or most) mobos, SATA is 3rd and fourth master . |

Windows CD boots up, its able to automatically detect the drive and install on it. No floppy required. RE: Raid on ours its via Bios and there is also a windows software as well. |

As long as I have set the BIOS to enable/detect SATA (and not going to use RAID) I should be fine -- primary SATA drive will be the one on SATA0 I presume?? Correct. XP should install on SATA 0, or whichever one you make the boot disk. No SATA RAID, no drivers required at ALL. And just as long as the BIOS detects the 2nd SATA, XP should detect it, and once you format the 2nd SATA thru disk management, it (the 2nd SATA), should appear in My computer. I dont think it matters, which SATA header u connect it to, just as long as you select the right SATA to boot from in the BIOS. |

| 418559 | 2006-01-05 23:38:00 | thats not neccarly true. some of the SATA chipsets require drivers to be installed before windows, some don't. just follow the motherboards instructions. |

| 418560 | 2006-01-05 23:40:00 | Well, maybe . BUT the mobo's I've installed XP on (with SATA), have never needed drivers, unless its in RAID . Which are mostly ASUS mobos . Only way to find out, is to try it . If it doesn't work, then u need a floppy and the SATA drivers . |

| 418562 | 2006-01-06 00:04:00 | As Ali said, he has no floppy. So can't install drivers, even if he wanted to. And doesn't want to use a floppy. Unless something like a USB key works, if he's got one. |
