419617 2006-01-10 04:15:00 My apologies in advance as I have a feeling my question may descend into incoherent babbling,
For the record I do know how to use a search engine, and i have searched the old posts here, these are just the questions I am not sure of

Checking the specs of my DVD player (sanyo SL33 (www.sanyo.ca) ) I see it can play DVD-R disks, so i want to write some of my movie video files to dvd to view on the big screen (OK read "Bigger than my Monitor")
I have already asked for software suggestions in a previous post here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and have had a play with some of the programs and have done a VCD as a test and everything seems fine with it (apart from a minor synching problem for a few minutes)

So

1)
All sites i have seen, seem to state that the DVDs can only take 120 mins of video,
is this true?
As all of the videos I have are of VCD quality and i seem to be able to fit about an hour on a cd (700Mb) it seems odd that a dvd which has 6-7 times the storage space can only hold double the amount of video

DVD-VCD seems to be the solution for what I want, but how easy are these to create, has anyone made one and successfully got it working.

2)
How much does a spindle of these disks cost (dvd-r) I have seen then on the DSE site and at the supermarket and they seem about $12 - $16 for 10 is that reasonable?

I'll stop there for the time being as I've melted my own brain trying to explain this, without confusing myself

Cheers

I found this tutorial here (www.afterdawn.com) does this look like i am on the right track,

Why couldn't the world just agree on one format for everything, it would make life so much easier

419619 2006-01-10 04:24:00 1. Depends if the blanks you're using are 4.7GB or 8.4-5 GB.

2. Yup, these are most probably 4.7 GB not dual layer.

Dual layer DVD's can cost between $6-7 to $14-15 each.

VCD is usually low quality, compared to DVD. Thats why u can get more on a CD, if you burn whatever as a VCD.

Never heard of DVD-VCD. Its either a DVD (on a blank DVD), or VCD (you burn to a CD). Both DVD's and VCD's can be done in Nerovision.

419620 2006-01-10 04:26:00 According to some people, the "one ring to rule them all" is owned by Microsoft. Has it made life easier? :D

The basic problem with standards is that (a) people all prefer their own, and (b) if some standard is achieved, people immediately start "improving" it.

DVD-VCD (www.afterdawn.com) is a dvd using vcd compression sp technically you should fit 5-6 hrs worth of video, the only issue is the sound, dvds need the sound at a different rate to that of a vcd

I don't suppose anyone knows a program that burns dvd-vcd and automatically rejigs the sound.

My source files are .avi files

419622 2006-01-10 06:07:00 DVD-VCD sounds the same as VCD. No diff at all.

Nerovision does both.

419623 2006-01-10 07:04:00 Yep I realise it does both

But how do i get it to realise that I want to convert the avi files to vcd format (on the dvd), as everytime I try and add an avi file it automatically wants to set it at DVD quality (ie 2Gbs of space on the DVD as opposed to 600MB), and of course get it to automatically correct the audio to 48KHz

Do I have to create VCD disks first then try and get them put on to it or is there another way

Sorry if I'm sounding dense I just can't see how to do it
